NHAI Begins Work on Study to Tackle Sarai Kale Khan Gridlock

Bharatmorningnews.com – The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) begins work on study to address the persistent traffic congestion at Sarai Kale Khan loop, one of the capital’s most critical transportation hubs. According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the authority has launched the preparation of a comprehensive detailed project report (DPR) aimed at decongesting this major interchange and developing long-term engineering and traffic management solutions for the Ring Road stretch.

This strategic initiative comes at a crucial time when the Sarai Kale Khan junction is experiencing unprecedented traffic pressure. The DPR will thoroughly examine various measures designed to improve traffic flow at this vital interchange, which serves as a convergence point for vehicles arriving from multiple directions including Ashram, Noida, and Sarai Kale Khan areas.

Comprehensive Traffic Solutions in the Pipeline

“The DPR will examine long-term traffic management and engineering solutions for one of the busiest transport nodes in Delhi and will complement the ongoing infrastructure development initiatives in the region,” the NHAI statement clarified, emphasizing the holistic approach being adopted.

The timing of this study is particularly significant given the imminent commissioning of the DND-Sohna National Highway corridor, located approximately 100 metres away from the Sarai Kale Khan loop on the Ring Road. This new corridor is expected to substantially increase traffic volumes passing through the junction, making timely intervention essential.

“With the upcoming commissioning of the DND-Sohna National Highway corridor, the location is expected to witness a substantial increase in traffic volumes, necessitating timely intervention to ensure smooth and efficient traffic movement,” NHAI officials stated in their announcement.

Sarai Kale Khan has evolved into one of Delhi’s most important multimodal transport hubs, accommodating an interstate bus terminus, a Delhi Metro interchange, an Indian Railways station, and a station on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The junction simultaneously handles heavy traffic from the Ring Road, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and the DND Flyway that connects the National Capital with Noida.

Recognizing the strategic importance of this location, NHAI has prioritized the DPR preparation to identify comprehensive infrastructure interventions for the corridor. The authority emphasized that the study will evaluate suitable engineering solutions aimed at enhancing capacity, reducing travel time, improving safety, and ensuring more efficient movement of vehicles through the corridor.

According to officials, the proposed measures would also ensure that the full operational benefits of the upcoming DND-Sohna corridor are realized by enabling seamless traffic movement through the Sarai Kale Khan interchange. This coordinated approach reflects the government’s commitment to addressing urban mobility challenges through systematic planning and infrastructure development.
