This marks Perkins’ debut in college basketball front office operations. Prior to this, he was recognized for his work as an analyst on ESPN’s NBA coverage. His professional journey began as a player, but he left college basketball behind to pursue a career in the NBA.

A Career Shaped by the NBA

Born in Beaumont, Texas, Perkins skipped collegiate play and was instead showcased as a McDonald’s All-American at Clifton J. Ozen High School. He entered the 2003 NBA Draft, where he was selected with the 27th pick by the Memphis Grizzlies before being swiftly traded to the Boston Celtics.

Perkins became a key figure for the Celtics, anchoring their frontcourt during their 2008 NBA championship run. His contributions extended beyond that season, as he also participated in the 2010 NBA Finals and played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New Orleans Pelicans. His NBA career concluded in 2019, with a combined average of 5.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game across 14 seasons.

Following his retirement, Perkins transitioned to ESPN, where he became a familiar face in studio analysis and live game commentary. His new position at Jackson State will leverage this experience, integrating media collaboration into the basketball program’s strategy.

Perkins will partner with first-year head coach Trey Johnson, who ascended to the role in April after serving as associate head coach.
