Vande Bharat Express Hits Nearly 100 km/h on World’s Tallest Rail Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir

Bharatmorningnews.com – For the first time, the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express has been recorded traveling at close to 100 km/h as it crossed the Chenab Railway Bridge — the tallest railway bridge on Earth — situated in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The milestone followed a recent decision by Northern Railway’s Jammu division to raise the maximum allowable speed to 100 km/h across the newly completed 111-kilometre broad-gauge corridor linking Katra to BiBanihal, according to news agency ANI.

Speed Cap Lifted After Safety Clearance

Railway officials confirmed to PTI earlier on Tuesday that the ministry had approved the speed hike after all mandated safety prerequisites were satisfied. Before this change, trains on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-to-Sangaldan segment were capped at 85 km/h, while the Sangaldan-to-Banihal segment was limited to 75 km/h.

Broader Connectivity and Economic Impact

“The increase in speed will not only reduce travel time, but will also strengthen the connectivity of Jammu-Kashmir. Passengers will get faster, safer and more comfortable travel facilities. This will also boost tourism, trade and economic activities in the region. Railways remains continuously committed to the safety and convenience of passengers,” said Uchit Singhal, senior divisional commercial manager, Jammu, speaking to PTI.

Engineering Marvel Through Extreme Terrain

The 111-kilometre Katra-Banihal corridor forms one of the most technically demanding segments of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, whose stated goal is to deliver uninterrupted rail access between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.

The alignment threads through some of the most punishing landscapes in the Pir Panjal and lower Himalayan ranges, crossing deep gorges, near-vertical slopes, major river systems, and geologically complex formations.

Among the section’s signature structures are the Chenab Railway Bridge spanning the Chenab River near Reasi and the Anji Khad Railway Bridge — India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. The corridor also encompasses 33 tunnels.
