Tourism Ministry Partnership with Netflix, YouTube to Boost Travel

Bharatmorningnews.com – Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared his confidence that the Tourism ministry s partnership with leading digital platforms like Netflix and YouTube could transform how India presents itself to the world. His comments were delivered at a Wednesday event at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, which also marked Netflix’s tenth anniversary in the Indian market. The minister highlighted that strategic collaborations with private players including Google and Air India may produce exceptional outcomes for destination promotion.

Visual Storytelling for Destination Marketing

On the same day, Netflix was shooting at over 100 locations across India for various productions. This activity follows a non-commercial memorandum of understanding signed between the ministry and Netflix Entertainment Services India on World Tourism Day last year. The agreement aims to promote Indian travel destinations through compelling visual content.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Co-CEO, joined the minister for a fireside chat during the event. They discussed how narrative content can enhance India’s cultural heritage, tourism industry, and creative sectors on a global stage.

India’s strength lies in its continuity of civilisation and the incredible diversity.

Sarandos emphasized these qualities when asked about digital platforms advancing India’s cultural diplomacy. Shekhawat, who manages both culture and tourism portfolios, noted that India offers abundant content for international viewers.

Films, serials and different platforms, like Netflix, can play a pivotal role in taking this entire idea, and the stories of India to the rest of the world. What I feel is that these partnerships can create wonders.

New Digital Portal for Netflix Locations

Officials introduced an ‘As Seen on Netflix’ section on the ‘Incredible India’ website as part of this collaboration. The feature helps global audiences discover real places, traditions, and experiences featured in Netflix India’s shows and movies.

Sarandos explained that representing authentic local content remains challenging because the concept of “local” varies significantly across India’s diverse regions.

Our team here in India … they are constantly looking to capture that diversity of storytelling. No one story can represent India, and that makes it difficult, but it makes it very rewarding as well.

The executive mentioned that Netflix has produced original content at more than 100 Indian sites during its decade-long presence. These productions highlight geographical variety alongside the people, history, food, music, and fashion that characterize Indian culture.

Investment and Viewer Engagement

Netflix India has created around 200 original productions over ten years, spending approximately two billion dollars on content development. Sarandos observed that audiences frequently visit filming locations through movies and series, even when those places are fictional.

But it exposes a part of India that many people have never seen, even inside of India. So, you think about, and, and now we’re hearing all these great stories of people who want to go to the location where it was filmed in Mussoorie … even though that cafe is fictional.

He commended the series ‘Musafir Cafe’ for its success in introducing lesser-known areas to viewers.

Building Strategic Alliances

Shekhawat noted that Netflix connects with millions of viewers worldwide, accumulating billions of viewing hours. Within India, the service has built a dedicated subscriber base over ten years.

The Tourism Ministry has developed relationships with multiple platforms, organizations, and aviation partners. The minister confirmed that all recent agreements with Netflix, Indigo, Air India, YouTube, and Google operate on a non-commercial basis without ministry payments.

And, whatever agreements we have entered into, we have either with Netflix or with… the recent ones we did with Indigo, with Air India recently, and we have done with YouTube also, and with platforms like Google, we did with technology platforms. They’re all non-commercial. We’re not paying them anything for this.
