NHAI Strengthens Measures to Combat Unauthorized Parking on National Highways

NHAI intensifies action against unauthorised parking – The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced heightened efforts to address encroachments and unauthorized parking along national highways, aiming to improve road safety. The agency emphasized that these actions are crucial for minimizing risks to drivers and ensuring smoother traffic flow.

As part of its strategy, NHAI has pinpointed 595 key spots where unauthorized parking occurs across different states. These locations, complete with latitude and longitude data, are being monitored closely. The organization is collaborating with state governments, district administrations, and enforcement bodies to clear these spaces and prevent further obstructions.

Enhancing Safety Infrastructure with Advanced Systems

Alongside targeted removals, the NHAI has instructed its regional offices to conduct urgent inspections of Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) setups. This includes verifying the functionality of traffic monitoring cameras, video incident detection systems, variable speed detectors, message signboards, and emergency call boxes to support real-time safety responses.

“The initiative aims to strengthen road safety by providing timely information to national highway users, enabling them to adjust speed and driving behaviour well in advance,” said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

MoRTH highlighted that the project will integrate telecom-based alerts with NHAI’s digital platforms, such as the Rajmargyatra mobile app and emergency number 1033. Commuters will get early warnings via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls before entering hazardous zones. This system will operate for all Jio users near national highways, promoting proactive driving adjustments and safer travel conditions.
