Both characters approach this fling-filled evening with romantic intentions. After crossing paths on the street, they navigate New York City together yet independently, experiencing nightclub adventures and running into condom shortages along the way.

Travis Braun’s high-concept screenplay offers its sharpest commentary not on conservative interference in personal relationships, but on modern swipe-based dating culture, where genuine connection feels increasingly rare. Despite featuring product placements from Durex to K-Y, the film rarely conveys authentic emotion.
Instead, the narrative consistently narrows its scope. An early observation notes that heterosexuals claim ownership of the night since gay communities adapted to restrictive laws long ago. Rather than expanding its satirical reach, Gluck’s movie adopts a nostalgic approach, culminating in a romantic moment atop a famous New York monument.
Ultimately, the film proves neither bold nor insightful enough for its concept, yet not sweet enough for pure romance. It succeeds better as a meta-comedy featuring charismatic Hollywood actors acknowledging their screen chemistry. Sydney Sweeney, Glen Powell, and Pete Davidson each appear in brief cameo roles. On this front, neither Barbaro nor Turner has anything to fear.
Perhaps we will see more variations on this “Purge” theme in the future. One night only for backgammon? The possibilities seem endless.
