The war of words erupts as Himachal political leaders from both parties exchanged sharp allegations, with revenue minister Jagat Singh Negi challenging the necessity of introducing fresh legislation to combat document fraud, while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of establishing clear accountability mechanisms.

On Friday, the revenue, horticulture and tribal development minister Jagat Singh Negi publicly questioned the central government’s initiative to enact a new anti-paper leak law. Negi argued that the existing legal framework contains adequate provisions to address such issues, provided they are implemented with proper diligence and consistency across all levels of administration.

During his media interaction in Shimla, Negi highlighted that the fundamental problem lies not in the absence of legislation but in the inadequate enforcement of current laws. He pointed out that numerous paper leak incidents involve financial transactions worth several crores of rupees, and authorities possess the power to invoke stringent measures, including money laundering provisions, against those found guilty.

“The law already exists. The question is why it is not being implemented. In paper leak cases involving crores of rupees, even money laundering provisions can be invoked. The government should explain why existing laws are not being enforced,” Negi stated firmly.

He further emphasized that while new laws continue to be introduced, the real challenge remains in their effective execution. Negi called upon those responsible for the irregularities to accept moral responsibility rather than relying solely on the announcement of fresh legislative measures to address public concerns.

Opposition voices support student demands

Adding weight to the Congress position, MLA and All India Congress Committee spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Rathore observed that the central government was facing mounting pressure due to the alleged NEET paper leak controversy. Rathore asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent public statement failed to adequately address the core demands raised by protesting students across the nation.

Speaking to journalists in Shimla, Rathore commented that the government’s reactive approach demonstrated clear signs of being under pressure. He noted that despite various statements and actions taken by officials, the fundamental demands for which students have been demonstrating remain unfulfilled. According to him, the Prime Minister’s statement appeared to be an attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand.

“When students and youth are subjected to police action and lathi-charge, it is our duty as the Opposition to raise their voice. These students are our children and the future of the country, so it is our responsibility to stand with them,” Rathore declared.

BJP counters with allegations against Congress

The BJP responded vigorously to the Congress criticism, with Himachal Pradesh spokesperson Sandipani Bhardwaj strongly condemning Negi’s remarks directed at senior BJP leadership. Bhardwaj asserted that the revenue minister had lost both his political balance and credibility through his statements.

He urged Negi to focus on addressing the Congress government’s own shortcomings in employment generation and recruitment transparency rather than making personal attacks on BJP leaders. Bhardwaj highlighted that the state government had previously shut down the Himachal Pradesh Staff Selection Commission citing alleged irregularities in its functioning.

However, he questioned why the government had not made the investigation findings publicly available. Bhardwaj posed a critical question: if serious irregularities had indeed occurred within the selection commission, why had the state government not released a comprehensive white paper identifying all those responsible for the alleged misconduct?
