Indiscriminate tree felling can trigger foodgrain – During the inauguration of Uttar Pradesh’s Plantation Maha Abhiyan 2026, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stressed the vital role of forests in preserving ecological stability. He emphasized that widespread tree cutting could disrupt water availability, creating a chain reaction that threatens agricultural productivity and food security.

Speaking at the event on the Ramgarh Tal Ring Road, Adityanath underscored that natural vegetation is essential for sustaining river systems. “Forests act as the foundation for perennial water sources, and their loss could trigger a severe shortage of water, impacting farming and ultimately leading to a food crisis,” he stated.

“Planting a tree is more than an act of environmental care—it is a pledge to future generations,” Adityanath remarked, encouraging citizens to adopt saplings in honor of their mothers as part of the campaign’s theme.

He also pointed out that environmental disruption can interfere with monsoon patterns, endangering farmers. Deforestation, he warned, heightens the risk of prolonged droughts and limits access to clean drinking water.

The state government aims to plant 350 million saplings in a single day, leveraging over 5.7 million nurseries. The initiative includes diverse species such as medicinal plants, fruit-bearing trees, and those providing shade or timber. Officials reported that 300 million saplings were already planted by 4 pm, with involvement spanning all 75 districts.

Following the event, Adityanath visited Ramgarh Tal, appreciating its natural surroundings and capturing a moment with the landscape. Notable attendees included BJP MP Ravi Kishan Shukla, Gorakhpur mayor Manglesh Srivastava, and several officials from local governance bodies.
