Health Workers Protest: Tamil Nadu Minister Seeks Time to Review Demands

Bharatmorningnews.com – The health workers protest in Tamil Nadu drew a request for patience from Health Minister K G Arunraj, who said the government needs time to examine the demands submitted by multi-purpose health workers. The workers had planned a hunger strike in Chennai after raising concerns about their employment conditions.

More than 2,500 daily-wage workers employed at government multi-specialty hospitals across the state were expected to join the protest near Rajarathinam Stadium. Police detained more than 200 people who gathered in Chennai, while some workers travelling from other districts were stopped. Police action was also reported in places including Krishnagiri, where some individuals were placed under house arrest.

The detentions prompted criticism from political leaders, including Udhayanidhi Stalin. The health workers protest has renewed attention on concerns affecting sections of Tamil Nadu’s public health workforce and the need for timely communication between workers and the administration.

Minister Says Proposals Will Be Considered

Arunraj spoke about the issue while attending the closing programme of a two-month statewide awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai. He said workers’ representatives had met him in his office and submitted their charter of demands only a few days earlier.

“Only some five days ago they had come to meet me in my chamber. They had submitted the list of their demands. I said we will definitely be examining their proposals and step-by-step we will be fulfilling them. But what is the need for having a protest within five days,” he said.

The minister said the government would assess the proposals and act on them in stages, though he did not announce a timeline for individual demands. For workers, the protest reflects a push for faster action on unresolved employment-related issues.

Arunraj also referred to a separate protest by government doctors, which resumed after doctors involved in demonstrations were detained despite talks with the government the previous week. He said their concerns were under consideration by the relevant departments and the chief minister.

HIV Awareness, Treatment and Healthcare Staffing

At the Chennai event, Arunraj highlighted Tamil Nadu’s efforts to reduce HIV infections. He said the state’s HIV infection rate had declined from 0.4 per cent in 2010 to 0.19 per cent at present.

“Even so, we will increase our awareness efforts and create an HIV-free Tamil Nadu by 2030,” he said.

According to the minister, 1,63,151 people are receiving anti-retroviral therapy through government hospitals and primary health centres. He also stressed that early screening of pregnant women and prophylactic treatment can prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission.

On healthcare administration, Arunraj said vacancies for the Director of Medical Education and the Dean of Madras Medical College would be filled during the week. He added that a government order for seven new nursing colleges announced in the state budget was expected shortly.

The minister also reiterated the chief minister’s direction that government hospitals should prioritise patient experience through shorter waiting times, clean toilets and adequate drinking water.
