Eight BJP Two SP Candidates Elected Unopposed to Rajya Sabha

Bharatmorningnews.com – Eight BJP two SP candidates have been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, ending the biennial election process without a vote. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party secured the remaining two.

Returning officer Ajit Kumar Verma declared all 10 candidates elected after the deadline for withdrawing nominations ended on Friday, October 9. Since the number of remaining candidates matched the number of available seats, polling was not required.

“All the 10 candidates, who were in the fray for the Rajya Sabha, have been declared elected. Friday (October 9) was the last date for the withdrawal of nominations,” Verma said.

BJP and SP nominees declared elected

The BJP nominees elected to the Upper House are Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan and Shruti Gangwar. The Samajwadi Party candidates are Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani.

In Rajya Sabha elections, members of the state Assembly vote when there are more candidates than seats. In this case, the Eight BJP two SP candidates were returned unopposed because no contest remained after nominations were withdrawn.

Most elected members, or their authorised representatives, collected their certificates. Verma said Nathwani was the only candidate who had not collected his certificate personally. Representatives collected certificates for Ram Gopal Yadav and Radhakant Ojha.

“Except Samajwadi Party candidate Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, the rest have collected their certificates. Representatives of Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and BJP candidate Radhakant Ojha have collected the certificates on their behalf,” Verma said.

Nathwani was expected to collect his certificate on October 12.

Why the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha seats became vacant

The election was held because the terms of 10 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh are scheduled to end on November 25. Rajya Sabha members retire in phases, so biennial elections are held to fill seats as they fall vacant.

Outgoing members include Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and BL Verma, along with BJP members Arun Singh, Geeta Shakya, Neeraj Shekhar, Brijlal and Seema Dwivedi. Ram Gopal Yadav, who has been re-elected, and Bahujan Samaj Party member Ramji Gautam are also among those whose terms are ending.

A separate Uttar Pradesh-associated Rajya Sabha seat had become vacant on September 11 after former deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma resigned following his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Leaders respond to the unopposed election

Dharampal Singh, a Uttar Pradesh minister and Lodh community leader, dedicated his election to the late former chief minister Kalyan Singh, whom he described as his political mentor. After receiving his certificate, he paid tribute at Kalyan Singh’s statue opposite the municipal corporation office.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the BJP’s successful nominees and said he expected them to contribute to the goal of a developed India while upholding the dignity of the Rajya Sabha.
