DTC Plans Full Body Ads on Electric Buses: A Revived Revenue Strategy

Bharatmorningnews.com – New Delhi: The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is moving forward with plans to introduce full-body advertisements on its growing fleet of electric buses, effectively reviving a proposal that had been shelved last year. This strategic initiative comes after concerns raised by road safety experts regarding visibility through bus windows and the potential for driver distraction were addressed through careful planning and implementation guidelines.

According to a DTC official speaking on Thursday, the primary objective behind this renewed effort is to significantly boost the corporation’s non-fare revenue streams. By monetizing the extensive advertising space available on electric buses, DTC aims to create a sustainable additional income source that complements its core transportation services. The corporation currently operates 948 air-conditioned electric buses across eight major depots throughout the national capital, making this an attractive canvas for advertisers seeking city-wide visibility.

Implementation Details and Operational Guidelines

Under the comprehensive proposal, advertisements will be displayed on the exterior of the entire electric bus fleet using innovative bus body wraps. These wraps will cover the permissible advertising area of each vehicle while ensuring that windows remain clear for passenger visibility. The eight depots involved in this initiative include Wazirpur, Indraprastha, Rohini-II, Kalkaji, Sukhdev Vihar, Hasanpur, Subhash Palace, and Rohini-I, providing extensive coverage across different parts of Delhi.

The official emphasized that all advertisements will take the form of full exterior body wraps, carefully designed to maximize visual impact without compromising safety standards. The selected advertising agency will be responsible for ensuring that all displays comply with applicable advertising regulations and do not create any traffic hazards for motorists and pedestrians alike.

“The advertisements will be in the form of full exterior body wraps covering the permissible advertising area of the buses. The wraps will be installed only on the outside of the buses, while the selected agency will have to ensure that the displays comply with applicable advertising regulations and do not create traffic hazards.”

Content restrictions have been clearly outlined to maintain brand appropriateness and public standards. Advertisements containing obscene or offensive content, as well as those promoting alcohol, tobacco, weapons, violence, or other prohibited categories, will not be permitted under this scheme. This ensures that the advertising campaign aligns with DTC’s public image and regulatory compliance requirements.

Operational efficiency remains a priority in the implementation phase. The selected agency will handle both installation and maintenance responsibilities, with all installation work scheduled during off-duty hours or nighttime to prevent any disruption to regular bus operations. Furthermore, any damage to buses caused during the installation or removal process must be promptly repaired by the agency at their own expense, protecting DTC’s valuable fleet assets.

This initiative represents a revival of a similar proposal that DTC had floated last year but ultimately shelved following expert recommendations. Safety concerns had centered around the possibility that window wraps could negatively affect visibility for both passengers and other road users, potentially reducing overall safety standards. The current proposal addresses these concerns by limiting wraps to exterior surfaces while maintaining clear windows.

As DTC continues to expand its electric bus network, the full-body advertising initiative offers a win-win scenario for both the corporation and advertisers. The corporation gains a new revenue stream while advertisers benefit from extensive city-wide exposure through the mobile advertising platform. This strategic move demonstrates DTC’s commitment to modernizing its operations and exploring innovative ways to generate additional income while maintaining its core transportation mission.
