The controversy intensified when Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi countered by requesting the Prime Minister to offer an apology to students instead, citing what he described as a flawed examination framework that did not deserve such magnanimity.
Modi’s Instagram Message Sparks Debate
In a video shared on Friday evening, the Prime Minister acknowledged the widespread distress felt across the nation while emphasizing the importance of mentoring the younger generation. He expressed his desire to pardon the youth, noting that errors are human, yet he found it particularly jarring that young women were employing such harsh vocabulary. This statement emerged as public attention focused on allegations that certain demonstrators had used offensive language directed toward the PM.
“Not only was I subjected to abusive language at Jantar Mantar, but even my late mother was abused there,” he remarked.
Gandhi’s Sharp Rebuttal
Through a post on X, Rahul Gandhi delivered a pointed critique of the Prime Minister’s message. He highlighted the profound sorrow experienced by families who have lost children, connecting this tragedy to systemic failures within education.
“Nothing is more painful than seeing a parent grieve their child… Behind every young life lost is a family carrying pain that will never leave them – and serious questions about a broken education system.”
These comments followed Gandhi’s meeting with bereaved families during his extensive visit to Tamil Nadu. He further criticized the examination process, pointing out how leaked question papers and sudden cancellations had ruined years of student effort.
“Leaked papers. Cancelled exams. Years of preparation destroyed overnight. Our students are told to work honestly in a system that is not honest with them… And the Prime Minister has the audacity to speak of ‘forgiving’ students,” the opposition leader stated.
Gandhi emphasized that the Prime Minister had failed to personally connect with grieving parents or students whose academic futures had been compromised by examination irregularities. He concluded that Indian students required an apology rather than forgiveness from the highest office in the land.
Other Political Responses
Former Union Minister P Chidambaram questioned whether the Prime Minister had also pardoned BJP supporters who frequently post offensive comments on social media platforms when criticizing government policies.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera observed that while citizens were seeking accountability, the Prime Minister had chosen to forgive the nation instead of offering an apology.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav expressed skepticism about public willingness to forgive the BJP, suggesting that even a humble apology would not suffice given the party’s failure to honor its commitments. He attributed potential political decline to BJP’s perceived arrogance.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray called for apologies from both Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the treatment of protesters. He specifically mentioned instances where students were struck with studded sticks, exposed to pellet guns and tear gas, and where female demonstrators had their clothing torn by male police officers.
Government’s Defense
Addressing accusations of evading responsibility, the administration highlighted legislative progress through the Public Examinations Amendment Bill and the establishment of a dedicated task force for examination improvements. Government representatives asserted their preparedness for substantive parliamentary discussion, noting that several opposition MPs, including Akhilesh Yadav, had themselves advocated for addressing the matter within the House.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi characterized the situation as a contrast between the Prime Minister’s empathy and what he described as the stubbornness of feudal politicians, suggesting their behavior revealed underlying frustration.
The Girl in the Viral Video
A young woman featured in a widely circulated video addressing the Prime Minister with harsh words released her own apology on Saturday. Identifying herself as fifteen years old, she explained that she had been “influenced” and characterized the incident as her “first and last mistake.” She clarified that the original video had not been uploaded by her personally and expressed deep embarrassment. While the Hindustan Times could not independently confirm the video’s authenticity, a Zero FIR had been filed against her in Noida following the incident.
