Engineering the Solution

Ankit Saingar, assistant director of horticulture for the Noida Authority, outlined the systematic approach used for each borewell conversion. Workers first excavated a circular area surrounding each borewell, creating a collection basin for rainwater. This basin was then layered sequentially with sand, coarse sand, and stones of varying dimensions to create an effective filtration system. When precipitation falls, it passes through these multiple filtration layers before reaching the borewell and adjacent earth, ultimately aiding aquifer recharge. The existing borewell pipe functions as a conduit, directing the cleaned water further underground where it can replenish groundwater reserves.

Residents have observed significant progress in Sector 51, where approximately eight borewells have been selected for conversion at the Children’s Park. Currently, only one borewell has undergone the complete pilot transformation, serving as a test case for the broader initiative. Sanjeev Kumar, general secretary of the Sector 51 RWA, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential. He explained that residents had previously requested the Noida authority to promote this concept, noting that since their park has defunct submersible pumps, it was suggested that it can be converted into a rainwater harvesting pit. There are at least eight to ten such borewells in the park, and the authority is working on converting all of them according to the timeline provided by officials.

RWA members indicated that work on an additional park within the same sector will commence shortly, expanding the reach of this initiative. Lata Verma, secretary of Swarnim Vihar Duplex in Sector 82, highlighted the practical benefits of this approach. Despite the positive outcomes observed so far, RWA representatives cautioned that building these structures is only part of the solution. Consistent maintenance routines must be established to ensure long-term effectiveness of the rainwater harvesting systems across all parks. Regular cleaning of filtration layers, inspection of pipes, and monitoring of water levels will be essential components of the ongoing management strategy. The Noida Authority is expected to evaluate the success of the pilot projects before expanding the initiative to other sectors throughout the city. This comprehensive approach to urban water management demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be repurposed to address contemporary environmental challenges while providing immediate benefits to local communities.
