Nolan Wells Cause of Death: Was There Foul Play? What We Know So Far About the Mississippi Teen’s Mysterious Death
Nolan Wells cause of death – Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old football player, died during a Fourth of July trip to Mississippi’s Horn Island. Hours after visiting the barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast with a group of friends, he was reported missing. His body was discovered two days later on the island’s northwest tip.
Investigation into Cause of Death Continues
Authorities have not yet confirmed the official cause of death. While some believe drowning is a possibility, the final conclusion depends on an autopsy and toxicology report from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department stated there is currently no evidence suggesting foul play. However, Nolan’s parents have raised concerns about the timeline and are conducting an independent inquiry with the help of civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
Timeline of Events and Witness Accounts
Nolan traveled to Horn Island on July 4 with friends, marking what his father, Elmore Wonsley, called his son’s “last hurrah” before starting football camp at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
One of his companions alerted the US Coast Guard around 11 p.m. on July 4, reporting him missing. His mother, Christine Wonsley, submitted a missing persons report to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department shortly after midnight.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter noted that friends who accompanied Nolan to the island were interviewed. They claimed he decided to stay behind after their boat left, planning to return with a different group later.
“The boat began taking on water,” said Chancery Court Judge Ashlee Cole, whose son was part of the group. “Nolan chose to remain on the island and return with others.”
Ben Crump highlighted discrepancies in witness accounts, including conflicting information about whether Nolan stayed behind on his own or intended to leave with another group after speaking with a young woman.
Discovery of the Body and Ongoing Questions
On July 6, search teams found Nolan’s body submerged in water near the northwest end of Horn Island. The Jackson County Coroner, Bruce Lynd, confirmed his identity using dental records but withheld a cause of death until the autopsy is complete.
Christine Wonsley, speaking to Good Morning America, expressed disbelief that her son would willingly separate from his friends. “We always taught him that if you go with five, you come back with five,” added Elmore Wonsley.
Sheriff Ledbetter acknowledged that online speculation has complicated the case. Meanwhile, Nolan’s family has arranged for an independent autopsy in Washington, DC, with assistance from former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Forensic experts are also analyzing Nolan’s cellphone, as Christine pointed out inconsistencies between its location history and Snapchat activity.
Christine stated during a press appearance with Ben Crump and Rev. Al Sharpton, “We just want to know what happened and why our baby didn’t come home.”
