Earthquake of 6 1 magnitude jolts – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake rattled the waters near Cuba’s western coastline on Monday, prompting reports of shaking in Florida and parts of Mexico. The tremors, which lasted around 20 seconds, caused residents to flee buildings and step outside.
Seismic Activity Reported Across Regions
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake originated approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) offshore, near the island’s westernmost point. Cuban officials confirmed that the seismic event was felt across the entire western region of the country, with effects extending to Florida.
“At first, I just felt dizzy—it didn’t occur to me it was an earthquake. I’d never experienced that before,” said Carmel Delgado, a 47-year-old economist, as recounted by AFP.
In Southwestern Florida, multiple reports described ground movement following the tremors. The National Weather Service Miami-South Florida noted that the earthquake occurred just west of Cuba in the southern Gulf, causing noticeable shaking in the area.
