Olympic dreams fuel young Kushwaha’s hockey dreams
Olympic Ambitions Drive Ketan Kushwaha’s Hockey Journey
Olympic dreams fuel young Kushwaha s hockey – Japan’s Hockey Asia Cup triumph by the Indian Under-18 team has sparked renewed excitement around young striker Ketan Kushwaha, whose performance contrasted sharply with his earlier cautious demeanor during his debut in the Hockey India League (HIL) this January. The 15-year-old, representing Shrachi Bengal Tigers, showcased remarkable confidence in leading his nation to victory in the tournament.
A Stellar Performance in the Final
Kushwaha’s contribution was pivotal, as he netted eight goals, including a hat-trick, while teammate Ashish Tani Purti added 13 goals to the team’s tally. India’s dominance in the league phase, with just one loss, culminated in a 4-1 victory over hosts Japan in the final. The win solidified their position as champions.
“We had plans to execute and we planned our strategy for every match. We took one match at a time and didn’t bother much about the next match,” Kushwaha shared with Hindustan Times after returning home to Jhansi on Tuesday.
The young forward attributed the team’s strong showing to a 40-day preparatory camp. “It was great to see what we trained for actually paid off and helped us win the title,” he said. “We wanted to play against Japan after losing once in an earlier stage, and when we got to play them in the final, we were full of enthusiasm.”
Leadership and Resilience on Display
Kushwaha’s leadership shone through during the tournament. In the opening match against Kazakhstan, he scored a hat-trick, helping India secure a 13–0 victory. His two goals in a 4-1 win over Korea further demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, contributing to the team’s six-point tally in Pool A.
Despite fracturing his left hand during the HIL, Kushwaha remained undeterred. He continued training with a tight strap securing his injured limb, maintaining his presence in the spectators’ gallery. “I didn’t want to miss training even while sitting on the chair in the stadium here, and that’s why I didn’t go home after sustaining the injury,” he explained. “Having my own coach and four teammates from my state in the Asia Cup helped me a lot.”
From Family Influence to National Stardom
Kushwaha’s passion for hockey began at an early age, inspired by his elder brothers who also play the sport. “I grew up watching my two brothers and the game became my primary form of entertainment,” he said. “I used to go to the ground with them to watch matches, and that’s when I really developed an interest in hockey.”
His dedication paid off, as he quickly rose to prominence after being selected for the HIL as the youngest player ever. Now, Kushwaha aims to represent India at the Olympics and World Championships, stating, “From here, we plan to represent India one day in the Olympics and World Championship. We will try our best now to win gold in the Olympics.”
Rajnish Mishra, Uttar Pradesh Hockey’s secretary and former India captain, highlighted Kushwaha’s potential as an assistant coach at the Asia Cup. “When I saw him for the first time during trials in 2022, I was sure about his success,” Mishra noted. “All five players from Uttar Pradesh, including Kushwaha, are well deserved for the Indian side, especially after helping UP win the Sub-Junior Nationals this year.”
