US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor Announces Philippines Quad Meeting
US ambassador to India Sergio Gor announces – The United States has scheduled a gathering of Quad foreign ministers for the Philippines in the coming fortnight, according to Sergio Gor, the U.S. envoy to India. This development was shared during a speech at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum leadership summit in Washington, where Gor highlighted the importance of the event.
Quad Meeting in the Philippines
“We’re excited about the Quad meeting taking place in the Philippines. While this is a significant step, it doesn’t diminish the importance of our other engagements. Ministerial meetings with all four partners will also occur in Australia at a future date,” Gor stated.
Earlier this year, the Quad nations unveiled a joint initiative focused on maritime surveillance in the Indo-Pacific region. This effort involves collaboration between India, Japan, Australia, and the U.S. to enhance shared intelligence and operational capabilities. Additionally, plans to bolster port development in Fiji have been part of the group’s strategic agenda.
Context of the Quad’s Relevance
Despite recent skepticism about the Quad’s effectiveness, Gor emphasized its continued significance. The grouping has faced scrutiny since the Trump administration began its tenure in January 2025, with no high-level meetings held between leaders. However, the upcoming Philippines event aims to reaffirm its role.
Gor addressed concerns over the U.S. decision to revert the Indo-Pacific Command to its original name, the Pacific Command. He argued that the change in designation should not overshadow the nation’s active involvement in regional initiatives. “The name on a command’s banner is secondary to the actions the United States takes,” he noted.
India remains a key partner for the U.S., with frequent military exercises and strategic interactions. “Each month brings new coordination, whether through Indian forces visiting or American troops deployed in the area,” Gor observed. The ambassador also mentioned that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to return to India later this year for further discussions, including a Quad ministerial meeting.
