Jaipur-Based Software Engineer Chooses Stability Over High-Pay in Japan

Techie explains why he turned down 55 – A Jaipur-based software engineer recently shared his reasons for rejecting a high-paying Japan job offer and opting to continue working remotely from his hometown. In a LinkedIn post, Yashaswi Soni, a senior software engineer, emphasized that family, work-life balance, and a stable environment were more important than the higher salary.

“I turned down a 55+ LPA international offer in Japan to stay in Jaipur,” Soni wrote. “This decision wasn’t made on impulse—it was a calculated choice.”

Soni explained that his decision came after his former employer requested a relocation to Pune, which he had previously declined. “This time, I wasn’t in a hurry. I knew what I wanted: remote work, stability, and a positive company culture,” he added. “No risk of sudden layoffs, and the freedom to maintain a peaceful lifestyle.”

Over the subsequent months, Soni received several job proposals, including roles in London, Dubai, and Japan. These offers ranged from ₹37 LPA for a fully remote London startup to ₹47 LPA for a Dubai-based position, and ₹55 LPA for a Japan-based opportunity. Even EPAM Anywhere presented a remote offer at ₹29 LPA.

Despite the Japan offer appearing the most lucrative on paper, Soni questioned whether he was truly prioritizing the right factors. “What am I actually optimizing for?” he asked himself, reflecting on his values beyond financial gain.

The techie highlighted that his wife had settled into a stable job in Jaipur, and the couple had created the life they envisioned—complete with a home, close family, and a tranquil pace. “We had finally built a life here: our own place, family nearby, no traffic, no chaos. We were happy,” he wrote.

Relocating to Japan, however, would mean starting over. “A new country, a new language, and a new life at a time when we had just found stability,” he noted. While Dubai’s tax-free salary was tempting, it didn’t align with his long-term goals.

Soni was nearly set to accept EPAM’s offer when his current employer extended a new opportunity. “I stalled EPAM’s process, went through the company’s interview rounds, and then did something unexpected,” he shared. He reached out to an interviewer on LinkedIn to confirm if the role would proceed, as he had another offer pending.

Once the confirmation arrived, Soni decided to join his current company in a fully remote role, rejecting all other options. Looking back, he remains confident in his choice. “Two years later, I can say with certainty that I made the right call,” he concluded. “Money is important, but it’s just one part of the equation.”

“The city you live in, the people around you, and the pace of your life are equally vital,” he added. “Optimize for the whole picture, not just the highest number.”

“Your perspective resonates, Yashaswi. I’ve worked remotely and now actively seek such setups. Flexibility and family proximity often outweigh salary,” one user commented.

“Great decision. I’ve made similar choices favoring remote roles over traditional office setups, and it’s boosted my career significantly,” another user shared.

“The balanced approach you took—combining financial wisdom with emotional insight—makes for a compelling story. Like a well-crafted dish, it’s the right mix that matters,” wrote a third.

“This makes sense. Taking time to evaluate options leads to better outcomes,” added another, highlighting the value of thoughtful decision-making.
