Police Conduct Pre-Dawn Operation at Abhishek Banerjee’s Kolkata Residence

Police raid Abhishek Banerjee s house – In a surprise early morning operation, Kolkata police carried out a raid at 2am on the home of Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary, in Kalighat area. The search was part of an investigation into a land fraud case where his personal assistant, Sumit Roy, is a named accused.

A senior official from West Midnapore police confirmed that a team from Salboni police station had tracked Roy’s mobile location. The search began after the location data indicated he was in Kalighat. “They arrived at the residence around 2am and conducted the operation for over an hour. The accused was not located, and no items were seized,” the official added.

TMC Leader’s Response and Political Reactions

Abhishek Banerjee was present during the search, but the police team faced resistance from those inside the home. “We requested people at the premises to open the door or inform Banerjee. They refused both. After a standoff lasting four hours, the Kolkata Police’s disaster management unit was called in to force entry,” an officer explained.

Meanwhile, former chief minister Mamata Banerjee quickly arrived at the scene following the alert. A lawyer also joined her shortly after. The search concluded at 7:40am, with Banerjee and Mamata present throughout the process. “The team entered the house around 6am, while CAPF personnel maintained a presence outside,” the officer noted.

“Mamata and Abhishek are past now. Those people have given them a befitting reply in the elections. And now they have to face the Constitution for what they have done. They can’t escape,” said Locket Chatterjee, a former BJP MP.

“@KolkataPolice arrives at 3am to @abhishekaitc’s home, breaks open door & searches for 90 mins to find nothing. Zero seizure, 100pc vendetta. BJP try everything. Intimidation & money will not make you win 2029,” tweeted Mahua Moitra, a TMC MP.

This incident occurs amid ongoing internal challenges for the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, which is navigating political turmoil following its electoral defeat. A significant number of rebel MLA members have been declared as “opposition” in the state assembly, and the party’s parliamentary faction is experiencing division.

Recent weeks have seen Abhishek Banerjee summoned in three separate cases by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the state police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID). On June 22, a Tripura court issued him a summons to appear before the Tripura police. The CID had already questioned him for six hours earlier in the week regarding a signature forgery case, and another team visited his home on Friday to serve a summons related to election speeches.

The raid highlights the escalating scrutiny on TMC leaders, with critics suggesting the operation was a calculated move to target Banerjee’s influence. As the party contends with internal strife, the police action underscores the broader political tensions shaping the state’s landscape.
