More Rain, Thunderstorms Forecast in Kerala as IMD Raises Alert

More rain thunderstorm expected in Kerala – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts in Kerala on June 10, effective from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM. This alert follows earlier warnings for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod on June 8, and for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod on June 9.

A yellow alert remains active for the entire state, signaling ongoing weather instability. The fresh warnings come amid forecasts of thunderstorms, moderate rainfall, and surface winds between 40 kmph and 50 kmph across multiple districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur, and others.

“An orange alert indicates heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm,” stated the IMD, highlighting the potential for severe weather conditions in the region.

On June 9, heavy rains and strong winds caused localized flooding in northern Kerala, prompting authorities to evacuate some areas as a precaution. The weather is expected to remain unsettled through June 11, with frequent showers and thunderstorms likely.

According to IMD projections, temperatures in Thiruvananthapuram will range from 26°C to 32.6°C during the day, while nighttime lows are predicted to fall between 23.4°C and 27.7°C.

Monsoon Progression and Regional Impact

The southwest monsoon has expanded into the west-central and northeast Bay of Bengal, with additional coverage in the northwest region. States like Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, along with parts of Tripura, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, are already experiencing monsoon activity as of June 7.

Forecasters anticipate the monsoon’s further reach into Maharashtra, Karnataka, and parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the coming days, maintaining favorable conditions for rainfall distribution.
