Chhattisgarh Girl Accused of Shoplifting Dies by Suicide; 3 Supermarket Owners Booked

Chhattisgarh girl accused of shoplifting dies – A 17-year-old girl from Baikunthpur in Chhattisgarh has been found dead in her home’s kitchen after being accused of shoplifting, according to police reports. The family alleges that the girl took her own life following a confrontation over stealing cosmetics and the seizure of her scooter by a supermarket owner, who demanded ₹50,000 for its return. This tragic incident has sparked widespread concern in the region, highlighting the emotional toll of shoplifting allegations on young individuals.

Incident and Initial Response

The tragedy unfolded when the Chhattisgarh girl accused of shoplifting and her sister visited a local supermarket to purchase household supplies. The three supermarket owners—Deepak Vaid, Vinod Vaid, and Jagat Vaid—reportedly pressured the sisters into signing a confession for theft and claimed possession of the scooter. The girl, who had not initially informed her family, later reached out to an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) she knew, seeking help. This connection to the police allowed the family to escalate the matter.

Upon learning of the situation, the ASI contacted the supermarket owners to retrieve the scooter. However, the owners insisted it was stored elsewhere and promised to return it the next day. The girl’s father, a police constable, stated that he visited the store on Wednesday and was told the same ₹50,000 demand still applied. That evening, while he was at a bus stand waiting for his wife, the Chhattisgarh girl accused of shoplifting was discovered hanging in the kitchen, her family devastated by the outcome.

“She was deeply distressed after being blamed for theft and pressured over the scooter. She feared scolding from her father and couldn’t speak up,” said Police Superintendent Ravi Kumar Kurre. He emphasized that the supermarket owners lacked the legal authority to seize the scooter without police intervention, which could have prevented the emotional breakdown leading to her
