Traffic crawls in Delhi despite Kanwar end, no rain
Delhi Gridlock Persists After Kanwar Yatra Without Rain
Bharatmorningnews.com – Commuters across Delhi faced significant mobility challenges on Wednesday, even as the annual Kanwar Yatra wrapped up on Tuesday and skies remained clear. Multiple corridors in the capital’s southern, central, and northern zones experienced heavy congestion throughout the day.
Worst-Affected Corridors
The 19-kilometer Outer Ring Road segment connecting Rao Tula Ram Marg to Okhla emerged as the most severely impacted stretch. Heavy delays were recorded between Munirka and the IIT flyover, near Panchsheel Park and Chirag Delhi metro station, and along the Nehru Place to Modi Mill flyover section.
Other heavily congested areas included the Ring Road corridor spanning Sarai Kale Khan to South Extension through Ashram Chowk, the Outer Ring Road extending from Ram Tula Ram to Modi Mill flyover, and the Mathura Road segment between Ashram Chowk and Badarpur. The Eastern Avenue-CV Raman Marg route connecting Maharani Bagh with Sukhdev Vihar Metro Station also saw substantial delays, alongside Okhla Road.
Causes of Congestion
Delhi Traffic Police identified several contributing factors to the traffic disruptions. Road accidents, commercial and private vehicle breakdowns, and infrastructure damaged by recent rainfall all played roles in creating bottlenecks.
Morning incidents included collisions on the Outer Ring Road close to IIT Delhi metro station and on Mathura Road near Badarpur flyover. An afternoon accident occurred on the Delhi Noida Direct flyway’s carriageway heading toward Noida.
The accident involved the bike and a concrete-mixture truck. Passersby gathered near the accident spot, which was also cordoned off for forensic examination. It slowed down the vehicular movement and led to a traffic snarl. However, by noon, normal traffic was resumed on the stretch,
noted a traffic police officer explaining the IIT Delhi metro station collision.
Vehicle breakdowns were documented on Mathura Road’s carriageway approaching Ashram Chowk near CRRI in Sukhdev Vihar, on the Ring Road near Maharani Bagh, and on CV Raman Marg close to Taimoor Nagar.
Communication Gaps
Despite the multiple disruptions, Delhi Traffic Police failed to issue public advisories through their social media channels. Their X platform account, which boasts 1.5 million followers, remained silent regarding congested routes or the underlying causes of traffic snarls.
Commuter Frustrations
Travelers expressed dissatisfaction with traffic management during peak hours. Mahadev Rathi, who commutes from Mahipalpur to Chirag Delhi, commented on inadequate road presence.
Only a few traffic personnel are seen on the roads, and those present are busy stopping violators. Their primary job should be clearing traffic,
Rathi observed.
Rajesh Shankar Mishra described experiencing severe delays during what is typically a non-peak period in the capital.
Around noon, which is considered a non-peak hour in Delhi, a massive bottleneck was on the stretch from Sarai Kale Khan loop to Ashram Chowk, and vehicles moved at a snail’s pace. It took me 25 minutes to cover 200 metres. I took the detour on the CV Raman Marg, but it was equally congested,
Mishra recounted. He further noted that a mechanic repairing a vehicle in the road center received no assistance from nearby traffic officers.
Additional Congested Areas
Similar traffic conditions were observed across numerous other locations including Sardar Patel Marg, Purana Quila-India Gate Circle Road, Ashoka Road, Rafi Marg, KG Marg, Barakhambha Road, Panchkuian Road, and the Patel Nagar-Shadipur route. The ITO, Delhi Gate, Red Fort, and Kashmere Gate areas also experienced gridlock.
While the IIT campus area congestion stemmed from a fatal motorcycle crash, officials from other affected zones did not provide detailed explanations for the delays. Both carriageways of the Ring Road between Sarai Kale Khan and Lajpat Nagar remained packed throughout the day.
