J’khand to Get Its First Film Institute; SRFTI-JFDCL to Sign MoU

Bharatmorningnews.com – Jharkhand, a region that has inspired iconic filmmakers such as Ritwik Ghatak and Satyajit Ray, and contributed themes to numerous Bollywood films, is preparing to host its first dedicated film institute. This development marks a significant step for the state’s cultural and cinematic growth.

Under the Information & Public Relations Department (IPRD), the Jharkhand Film Development Corporation Limited (JFDCL) will collaborate with the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), a deemed university operating under the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The partnership aims to launch the state’s first film institute, with officials confirming the MoU will be finalized on July 22.

“The MoU will be signed in the presence of the chief minister on July 22. SRFTI will oversee all academic initiatives, which will be funded by JFDCL,” explained Anand Kumar, joint director of IPRD.

The initiative seeks to nurture Jharkhand’s film and cultural heritage while offering local youth training in filmmaking and related disciplines. By establishing the Jharkhand Film & Technical Institute (JFTI), the project aims to create opportunities for students to develop skills without leaving the state.

Officials highlighted the state’s rich cultural legacy as a key driver for the film industry, noting how its history has inspired award-winning directors and provided narratives for several notable Bollywood films. They emphasized the potential for growth, citing examples like the filming locations of “Kala Pathar” in Dhanbad and the web series “Jamtara” and “Khakinwas,” both rooted in Jharkhand’s stories.

“SRFTI will provide consulting services and academic resources, including faculty and technical staff, for the institute’s setup. The courses will be designed based on specific objectives to cultivate a robust film culture in the region,” said an official.

As part of the agreement, SRFTI will handle curriculum development, lesson planning, and assessment systems, while JFDCL will manage procurement processes. This division of responsibilities ensures both academic and logistical support for the institute, which will be based at Suchna Bhawan in Ranchi.
