All were en route from Kabbar village in Rattihalli taluk to Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt in Koppal, a journey that was cut short by the devastating accident.

The collision took place around 1:30 am, a time when traffic on the highway was relatively light. Witnesses reported that the truck, which was reportedly overspeeding, lost control and crossed the median before striking the van. The impact was so severe that the van was crushed and its occupants thrown onto the road. Among the victims, Praveen and Kenchamma Balekayi were husband and wife, while Chinmay was their son. The accident occurred near Bhanapur, a key junction on the highway, where the van had been traveling to seek the blessings of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, a revered deity in the region.
