History sheeter with 50 000 bounty – A fugitive with a ₹50,000 reward on his head was fatally shot by police during an encounter in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday morning. The incident followed a reported robbery on the Muzaffarnagar highway, where the suspect and an accomplice allegedly targeted two individuals, threatening them with firearms and seizing their belongings before fleeing the scene.
Identified as Mehtab alias Baichen
The deceased, Mehtab alias Baichen, was a local resident of Kairana in Shamli district. Authorities noted his involvement in multiple severe crimes, including murder, dacoity, and extortion, with a monetary incentive of ₹50,000 offered by the Saharanpur Range deputy inspector general of police.
“The incident began around 3 a.m. when Narendra and his brother Nareshpal were traveling on a motorcycle to their agricultural fields near Jalalpur village,” stated SP Narendra Pratap Singh.
Details of the Incident
According to law enforcement, the two motorcycle riders intercepted the brothers on the Muzaffarnagar highway, brandishing a weapon and stealing their motorcycle key, an Oppo phone, and cash. The suspects then fired at the victims, who resisted, before escaping the area.
Following the robbery, a case was filed at Adarsh Mandi police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for robbery and attempted murder. During a subsequent district-wide operation, police teams from Adarsh Mandi and Kandhla areas tracked the suspects near a tube well close to the Khandrawali bridge.
Firefight and Injuries
The suspects opened fire on the police team, prompting defensive shots. Mehtab received gunshot wounds, as did Sub-Inspector Deepchand of Adarsh Mandi police station. Both were admitted to Shamli district hospital, where Mehtab was pronounced dead during treatment. The injured officer is currently receiving medical care.
Escape and Recovery
Mehtab’s accomplice escaped the scene by leveraging the cover of darkness and dense crops. A combing operation is now underway to locate and apprehend the missing suspect. Recovered evidence includes the stolen mobile phone, ₹180 in cash, the motorcycle key, a motorcycle believed to be used in the crime, a 9 mm pistol with six live cartridges, a carbine with seven live rounds, and eight spent 9 mm cartridge casings.
Broader Criminal Record
Mehtab had 33 criminal cases registered against him in Shamli and Saharanpur districts. He was designated a history-sheeter at Kairana police station. Additionally, he was linked to a March 1 robbery where the assistant manager of Thana Bhawan Sugar Mill and a Haryana Police woman constable were allegedly targeted for cash, jewelry, and a mobile device.
