Delhi’s AQI deteriorates by 100 points after dust storm
Delhi’s AQI Deteriorates Sharply Amid Dust Storm
Delhi s AQI deteriorates by 100 points – On Monday, Delhi faced a sharp decline in air quality, with the city’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) surging past 100 points. This spike pushed the index into the “poor” category, marking its first entry into this bracket in nearly a month. The deterioration was attributed to a recent dust storm and ongoing atmospheric conditions.
CAQM Waits on Stage I Restrictions
Although pollution levels rose, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) opted not to activate Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The agency cited forecasts predicting a gradual improvement, with the AQI expected to stay within the “moderate” range over the next few days.
Recent AQI Trends and Historical Context
As of 4 p.m. on Monday, Delhi’s AQI reached 228, compared to 127 on Sunday—a 101-point increase in just 24 hours. This was the first instance of “poor” air quality since May 28, when the index stood at 207. The last time conditions were more severe was on May 26, when the AQI peaked at 252.
“The dust storm likely elevated airborne particulate matter, while persistent dry winds exacerbated the situation,” remarked Navdeep Dahiya, an independent meteorologist. “These factors collectively led to the rapid decline in air quality.”
CAQM’s Assessment of the Situation
The CAQM stated that its GRAP sub-committee evaluated the data and linked the pollution surge primarily to the dust storms impacting the region. The panel emphasized that forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) suggested a trend toward better air quality in the coming days.
Weather Outlook for Tuesday
IMD projected light rain and thunderstorms for Delhi on Tuesday, which could help reduce pollutants and ease conditions. However, high temperatures are anticipated to linger, with daytime highs expected between 39°C and 41°C. Overnight lows will drop from Monday’s 27.3°C to a range of 24°C to 26°C.
Extended Weather Projections
Partly cloudy skies and elevated daytime temperatures between 38°C and 41°C are likely to persist throughout the week. While the upcoming weather may provide temporary relief, sustained heat and low humidity could continue to challenge air quality improvements.
