K. Laltluangkima of ZPM Secures Mizoram’s Rajya Sabha Seat

ZPM s K Laltluangkima elected as Mizoram – K. Laltluangkima, representing the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), has been chosen as Mizoram’s sole representative in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament. In a close contest against the Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate, Zothansangi Hmar, he won by a margin of 16 votes during the state Assembly election.

ZPM’s Winning Margin and Transition

The ZPM representative secured 26 of the 36 votes cast, surpassing the MNF’s candidate. This victory marks the end of K. Vanlalvena’s tenure as the state’s representative in the Upper House, with Laltluangkima now stepping into the role.

“Our focus remains on improving food self-sufficiency and reinforcing security along the state’s borders and regions,” stated a ZPM official, echoing the party’s pre-election promises.

Chief Minister Addresses Opposition Claims

Chief Minister Lalduhoma refuted accusations that the opposition had undermined the unity of ZPM’s leadership during the candidate selection process. “The opposition’s attempts to discredit our party’s cohesion are not taken seriously; the votes will speak for themselves,” he remarked after casting his ballot.

Polling Dynamics and Absentees

KJ Lalbiakngheta, a polling agent and ZPM general secretary, noted that two BJP MLAs and one Congress MLA did not vote. Additionally, MLA W. Chhuanawma was unable to participate due to a long-term illness. Despite an application for home voting, the request was denied by state election officials.

Political Profile of the New Representative

K. Laltluangkima, the newly elected Rajya Sabha member, is a well-known political leader in Mizoram. Currently serving as the ZPM’s spokesperson, he has been instrumental in guiding the party’s communication strategy. The ZPM maintains a strong majority in the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly, with 27 legislators supporting the party’s agenda.
