Post Vacant for One Year, Delhi Seeks to Appoint DERC’s Chairperson

Post vacant for one year Delhi – Delhi’s administration has begun the selection process for a new DERC chairperson and two additional members, following a year-long absence since the previous appointee retired.

The power sector department, through a public announcement released on Saturday, outlined that applicants must demonstrate expertise in engineering, finance, commerce, economics, law, management or related fields, along with proven integrity and experience.

Eligible candidates should possess “expertise in engineering, finance, commerce, economics, law, management or related fields, along with proven integrity and experience.”

This action aims to address the critical staffing gaps within the electricity oversight body, which plays a key role in determining power distribution rates and regulating service providers in the city.

According to a 2018 Supreme Court ruling, a legal or judicial specialist is required as one of the commission’s members. Qualifying legal professionals include current or retired judicial officials, advocates with a minimum of 10 years in practice eligible for high court appointment, or those with seven years of experience qualified for district judge positions.

The chairperson and members will serve a five-year term or until reaching the age of 65, whichever comes first. Their monthly salary will be ₹2.25 lakh, with any pension subtracted from this amount. Applications are due by July 3.

In a recent directive, the Supreme Court mandated the appointment of DERC’s chairperson and two members within two months. The Delhi government notified the court that a committee had been formed to handle the process.

The former DERC chair, Justice (Retd) Umesh Kumar, retired in July 2025 after being appointed in March. His predecessor, Justice (Retd) Jayant Nath, was temporarily named as DERC chairman by the Supreme Court before the new Delhi government took office.
