No FIR registered yet on Parvesh Verma slapping video, say Delhi Police
Delhi Police Yet to File FIR in Vikaspuri Road Inspection Altercation
Bharatmorningnews.com – A confrontation during a road inspection in Delhi’s Vikaspuri has developed into a sharp political dispute, with police saying on Monday that no first information report had yet been registered over video footage appearing to show minister Parvesh Verma slapping a man.
The incident took place on Sunday as Verma visited a roadwork site. The footage circulated widely online and showed an argument involving the minister, Aam Aadmi Party workers and AAP legislator Jarnail Singh. The disagreement centred on the quality of recently completed road construction and then escalated into a physical altercation.
Protest Over Demand for Case Registration
AAP leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj, Jarnail Singh and Kuldeep Kumar held a protest in west Delhi, demanding that police register a case against Verma. The leaders were subsequently taken away by police.
Bhardwaj said he, Raja Singh and Raja Singh’s son Saheb Singh had been held at Jafar Pur Kalan police station. In a post on X, he accused the police of protecting Verma instead of acting on the complaint.
“We are locked up in Jafar Pur Kalan police station with Raja Singh and his son Saheb Singh. Instead of registering an FIR against Pravesh Verma, the police is providing him protection,” Bharadwaj said.
The demand for an FIR has become a central point in the dispute. A formal FIR begins a criminal investigation, but police had not taken that step in connection with the alleged slapping incident as of Monday, a senior officer said.
Videos Show Dispute at Construction Site
The videos emerged from Verma’s inspection of the Vikaspuri road project. In one clip, Jarnail Singh can be seen removing pieces of the newly laid road surface by hand and showing them to the minister. People present at the site questioned the condition of the work as the inspection unfolded.
Another video appears to show Verma lowering the hands of a person who was recording him. He then appears to slap that individual, identified later as AAP worker Saheb Singh. Others nearby stepped in shortly afterwards and separated the men.
The clips have fuelled competing claims over both the encounter and the roadwork itself. The episode has also brought renewed attention to the often contentious nature of inspections involving public infrastructure, where questions over construction standards can rapidly become political confrontations.
Verma Cites Alleged Abuse of His Family
Verma defended his reaction in a video shared on X. He alleged that a worker associated with Jarnail Singh had abused members of his family and said his response came during an emotionally charged moment.
“When one of his (MLA Jarnail Singh) workers started hurling abuses at my family, I reacted just as anyone would in the heat of the moment,” Verma said.
He also accused Jarnail Singh of damaging the road because the legislator was not receiving any “commission” from Public Works Department workers at the location. Singh rejected that allegation, maintaining that it had been made because he had exposed shortcomings in the government’s work.
The clash therefore involves two distinct issues: the conduct seen in the video and the underlying disagreement over the road project. While AAP has focused on the alleged assault and called for legal action, Verma’s side has questioned the actions of those who arrived at the site during the inspection.
Complaints Filed Over Obstruction and Money Demand Claims
Police have received two separate complaints from PWD engineers and the contractor connected to the project. The complaints concern allegations that Jarnail Singh attempted to forcibly halt work on September 24 and illegally demanded money.
Submitted to police on Sunday, the complaints alleged that Singh and members of his team damaged the fresh road surface. They also sought an FIR on allegations including obstruction of public work and criminal intimidation.
Those complaints are separate from the demand for action over the alleged slapping video. Their presence adds another legal and political dimension to the dispute, with accusations now being made against figures on opposing sides of the confrontation.
Congress and BJP Enter the Debate
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge joined the controversy on Monday morning, criticising what he described as a broader pattern of power being used to humiliate people. In a Hindi post on X, Kharge referred to multiple incidents involving ministers, protests and political rhetoric.
“Delhi’s ministers are slapping youth. Under Amit Shah’s watch, youth were baton-charged at Jantar Mantar. Before that, a minister’s son ran over farmers with his car. A central minister said, ‘goli maro’,” Kharge said.
Kharge also said that oppression and humiliation become habitual when the arrogance of power reaches its highest point.
The Delhi BJP called the Vikaspuri incident unfortunate and said Verma had himself acknowledged that his action was wrong. At the same time, BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor raised questions about Jarnail Singh’s presence at the site, saying the legislator came with supporters despite having advance information about the inspection.
With no FIR yet registered over the footage involving Verma, the matter remains politically charged. The next focus is likely to remain on how police assess the video, the rival allegations and the complaints submitted by PWD personnel and the contractor.
