Days later, his family began searching for him. They now say they were devastated to learn that an unidentified body recovered in Gurugram on September 10 had already been cremated before they were told of the discovery.
Police have alleged that Yuvraj was murdered in connection with a financial dispute involving crores of rupees. His body was found in a drain in Gurugram, while investigators continue examining the circumstances of his death and the financial links between the people involved.
Wedding preparations turned into a search
Yuvraj had spent time with his family in Lajpat Nagar on September 6 while shopping for his upcoming wedding. His sister, Karishma, said the family last spoke with him at about 7.30 pm that evening.
“He had gone to Lajpat with us for wedding shopping. His wedding was to take place in a month. After finalising his sherwani, he left, saying he had a meeting with a former woman colleague. He had also informed his fiance and his boss about the meeting,”
Karishma said Yuvraj initially sent messages saying he was safe and asking his relatives not to worry. He also indicated that his phone could be switched off. Later communications said he would return first on Saturday and then on Thursday, but he did not come back.
“Then my sister requested him to at least show his face. She asked why he was not calling or coming home. He never does this. We started panicking because he never does anything wrong,”
His absence caused particular concern because he had long been a central support for his parents. The family said his father has partial paralysis and his mother is frequently unwell. Childhood friend Rajat Jain said Yuvraj had taken responsibility for the household from an early age and was close to Jain’s family.
After waiting for him to return, the family approached Delhi Police on September 11, five days after he disappeared.
Former colleagues arrested in Uttarakhand
The investigation led police to Yuvraj’s former colleague Anya Vats, who had the last-known telephone conversation with him, and her husband Sanyam Sachdeva. The pair were arrested in Uttarakhand, where they were staying in paying-guest accommodation after technical surveillance pointed investigators to Vats’s location.
During questioning, the two allegedly told police that Yuvraj had been killed and that his body had been disposed of in a drain near their Gurugram residence. Police have also alleged that the accused moved around in a vehicle before parking it in their residential society with the body inside, later dumping it in the drain.
Yuvraj, Vats and Sachdeva had previously worked at the same real estate firm. Vats had been dismissed from that company over alleged financial irregularities. Police are examining financial records and the nature of transactions linked to Yuvraj and Vats, who had been working as a freelancer and assisting him with some property deals.
Investigators have said preliminary examination of the accused’s finances indicated that they maintained a lavish lifestyle despite limited funds. The alleged dispute involving crores remains a key line of inquiry, though the precise financial arrangement and the events that preceded the alleged killing are still being examined.
Questions over recovery and cremation
Police said Yuvraj had been asked to park his own car before entering Vats’s SUV. He was allegedly seated in the front passenger seat, with Vats behind him and Sachdeva driving. Officials have not publicly detailed how he was killed. The post-mortem report being obtained from Gurugram Police is expected to clarify the cause of death and other forensic findings.
On September 10, Badshahpur police station recovered an unidentified body from a drain in its jurisdiction. Yuvraj’s family says it was not notified despite his missing-person case being registered in Delhi.
Karishma said the family only learned during the Delhi Police investigation that the body had been recovered on September 10 and cremated four days later because it was decomposed.
“They said the body was decomposed and hence they kept it for three days and cremated it on September 14. I requested them to give me something of his that I could take to my mother. They gave us nothing. He was wearing a ring and a watch also, but we got nothing,”
The family has also challenged an initial suggestion that Yuvraj died by drowning. For them, the unanswered questions extend beyond the alleged murder: they want clarity on identification procedures, communication between police jurisdictions and what happened to his personal belongings.
The case highlights the distress families can face when a missing-person investigation crosses city boundaries. For Yuvraj’s relatives, a month that was meant to culminate in a wedding has instead become a search for a full account of his final days and the handling of his remains.
