“I mean, I would argue, have they brought value to LIV? You know?” McIlroy said. “I think the PGA Tour’s in a really good spot.”
The Koepka Precedent and Its Price Tag
Brooks Koepka already demonstrated that a return is possible, having used a limited-time Returning Member Program in early 2026 to rejoin the PGA Tour after departing LIV Golf the previous December. The five-time major winner, however, paid a steep price: a five-year forfeiture of potential equity under the PGA Tour’s Player Equity Program, amounting to an estimated $50–85 million in lost value depending on his on-course results and the tour’s overall growth trajectory.
That same program, which opened for a three-week application window, closed on February 2. Major champions Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm—widely regarded as LIV Golf’s two most compelling draws—along with former British Open champion Cameron Smith, were all eligible to apply during that window but did not.
“A Tough, Tough Road Back”
McIlroy expressed little optimism that any additional returning players would be received with open arms under current circumstances.
“If they were offered this returning member program back in February, the one that Brooks took, then, yeah, maybe. But that has sort of come and gone,” McIlroy said.
“And I think it was said at the time that the deal that they might get going forward, if they do decide to come back, isn’t going to be as good as the one that Brooks got. So, yeah, I would say it’s going to be a tough, tough road back.”
Whether DeChambeau, Rahm, or Smith will remain with the breakaway circuit beyond the current season or eventually seek re-entry into the PGA Tour remains an open question as both tours navigate an uncertain competitive landscape.
