Punjab women to gain economic freedom in 80th year of Independence: emphasised CM Mann
Punjab CM Mann Declares 80th Independence Year a Milestone for Women’s Economic Empowerment
Bharatmorningnews.com – Speaking at state-level Independence Day festivities held in Ferozepur on Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann declared that the upcoming 80th anniversary of national independence would serve as a landmark year for women’s financial autonomy across the state. He outlined a broad range of welfare and development programmes while addressing the gathering.
Financial Assistance Under Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna
Following the unfurling of the national Tricolour at Cantt Board Stadium, Mann revealed that over 65 lakh women had already received monetary support through the Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna. State government data indicates that 74.59 lakh women are now enrolled in the programme, with ₹2,274.42 crore deposited directly into the bank accounts of 65.62 lakh beneficiaries to date.
The financial assistance is intended to give beneficiaries greater control over their spending.
Mann characterised 2026 as a year of empowerment for Punjab’s women and called on the remaining eligible women to complete their registration and access the scheme’s benefits.
Education Sector Gains
The chief minister asserted that Punjab had climbed from 27th position to the top rank in education performance. He pointed to results from government school students in national competitive examinations: 882 candidates cleared NEET, 361 passed JEE Mains, and 64 qualified in JEE Advanced.
Teacher and principal upskilling programmes, he noted, are being conducted in locations including Singapore, Finland, and Ahmedabad. Schools of Eminence and dedicated transport facilities for girls were also cited as pillars of the state’s education agenda.
Healthcare Expansion
Under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna, Mann stated that more than three lakh patients had accessed cashless treatment valued at ₹1,100 crore. The state now operates 1,090 Aam Aadmi Clinics, with approximately 92,000 individuals seeking medical care at these centres daily.
Irrigation and Agricultural Reach
The state has allocated ₹7,200 crore to broaden canal irrigation coverage. Mann reported that the proportion of land receiving canal water has surged from 26% to 80%. Currently 60.30 lakh acres are irrigated by canal water, a sharp rise from the 20.89 lakh acres recorded in 2022.
Employment, Investment, and Public Safety
More than 69,000 government positions have been filled on merit, Mann said. Since March 2022, investments totalling ₹1.83 lakh crore have flowed into Punjab, carrying the potential to generate livelihoods for roughly six lakh young residents.
On the drug-trafficking front, the state’s campaign has now completed 500 days. During that period, 56,394 cases were registered and over 75,000 alleged traffickers were apprehended. Defence committees have been constituted at village and ward levels, with approximately 1.25 lakh volunteers engaged in community-level drug-free initiatives. Citing Punjab’s 553-km international border with Pakistan, Mann confirmed that anti-drone systems have been deployed to intercept cross-border smuggling.
Sports and Road Safety
₹1,744 crore has been earmarked for sports development. Punjab is set to host the Hockey Asian Champions Trophy across Jalandhar and Mohali in October and November. The fourth season of Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan will commence in Bathinda on September 5.
The Sadak Surakhya Force, Mann added, has administered first aid to more than 25,000 individuals and transported over 35,000 injured persons to hospitals. He claimed the state’s road-accident mortality rate has fallen by more than 50%.
Tribute and Cultural Programme
Mann paid homage to freedom fighters and recalled Punjab’s pivotal role in the national independence struggle. Reflecting on the Partition of 1947, he noted that the state bore a devastating human toll, with millions of families uprooted and torn apart.
His government was working towards building a prosperous and “Rangla Punjab.”
He urged residents to safeguard the state’s peace, communal harmony, and brotherhood.
The Independence Day programme concluded with a march past by contingents from Punjab Police, BSF, PAP, Himachal Police, Punjab Home Guards, NCC, Scouts and Guides, and other units. Cultural segments featuring Giddha and Bhangra, alongside tableaus depicting government initiatives, rounded out the celebrations.
