Rushikesh Shinde arrived at IIT-B with engineering aspirations, securing admission to the mathematics bachelor’s program. Yet the conventional structure felt limiting for someone passionate about music and its technological applications. Discovering the CME proved pivotal for his academic trajectory.
“Everything changed when I learnt about the institute’s Centre for Multidisciplinary Education. Here, I could choose courses from different departments across IIT-B and create and customise my education based on my interests,” says Shinde.
Following a year within the standard mathematics curriculum, Shinde transitioned to the CME in 2024. His coursework spanned artificial intelligence, machine learning, design, electrical engineering, humanities, and rural studies. He simultaneously pursued music technology initiatives, developing projects focused on raga recognition and automated music generation. These accomplishments eventually earned him an engineering internship at Expedia Group, complete with a pre-placement offer.
Building Customized Academic Journeys
The CME’s core philosophy centers on providing students with a second chance to align their studies with genuine interests. Rather than committing to a single discipline based solely on JEE examination rankings, learners can reassess their priorities after completing the inaugural undergraduate year.
“Students make decisions based on their JEE rank and accordingly choose a discipline. But after starting their journey at IIT, many realise this is not really what they want to do for the rest of their lives” says Prof Rajesh Zele, who heads the CME.
The program delivers a three-year Bachelor of Science qualification accessible to students who have finished one year in any mainstream engineering stream. Depending on their primary focus, graduates receive degrees categorized under natural sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences, or arts and design. A minor concentration option is also available.
Second-year participants must engage with six foundational domains: humanities and social sciences, design, management, economics, environmental and rural studies, plus engineering. This requirement ensures exposure to diverse fields before students finalize their preferred combinations, according to Zele, an IIT-B graduate boasting twenty years of semiconductor sector experience.
Quality Assurance and Growing Appeal
Each CME participant receives guidance from a dedicated faculty advisor who supports course selection and project development while preserving student autonomy. Learners attend classes across multiple departments and collaborate with instructors throughout the institute.
Zele emphasizes that safeguards prevent students from treating the CME as a shortcut toward trendy subjects. “We don’t want this to be an exit strategy to take all the artificial intelligence courses or whatever the hot topic of the year is. We want them to do a truly multidisciplinary combination of courses,” he explains.
The program demonstrates increasing popularity, with enrollment climbing from twelve students in the inaugural cohort to fifteen in the second, and twenty-two in the third batch. Industry reception has been positive, with first-batch graduates securing positions at organizations including Visa, Expedia, Coinbase, and Battery Smart. One graduate has additionally launched an independent venture.
“Today, possessing knowledge through a multidisciplinary education is very important for industry.” He adds, “This approach also prepares students for the changing needs of industry. It also gives them the knowledge and skills needed to explore new ideas and become entrepreneurs.”
Chandrakant Salunkhe, president of both the SME Chamber of India and SME Business Management Institute, highlighted these benefits.
Looking Ahead
By August 2025, the inaugural CME cohort will complete their studies. For Shinde, the program successfully merged his passion for technology with music. He envisions a career in the corporate sector before launching his own enterprise focused on music technology or rural development, while continuing to nurture his creative pursuits.
