Pakistani Mountaineer’s Remains Retrieved from Broad Peak Following Deadly Avalanche
Bharatmorningnews.com – Local volunteers successfully retrieved the remains of a Pakistani climber on Thursday, nearly fourteen days after a catastrophic snowslide claimed ten lives on Broad Peak. Officials confirmed that Sohail Sakhi, one of the missing mountaineers, was among those recovered.
Sakhi’s whereabouts had been unknown since July 30, when a ten-person global expedition under the guidance of celebrated climber Nirmal Purja lost communication with their base camp. Subsequent reports indicated that all ten participants perished in what stands as one of Pakistan’s most severe mountaineering tragedies in recent memory. Rescue operations have now brought eight bodies back to safety, with Sakhi being the latest addition.
A regional volunteer group discovered Sakhi’s remains, and additional rescuers assisted in transporting the body to base camp. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, weather permitting, a helicopter will carry the body to a regional air base for further arrangements.

This recovery effort followed a candlelight vigil held in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, where mountaineers, diplomats, and civil society members gathered to pay tribute to the fallen climbers. The international team comprised participants from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, Britain, and the United States.
