Two missing friends found buried behind temple in Baghpat village; priest absconding
Friends Buried Behind Temple After Disappearance in Baghpat Village
Bharatmorningnews.com – Police in Baghpat have recovered the decomposed remains of two young men from beneath the ground behind a local temple, concluding a harrowing investigation into their disappearance. The bodies of Ankit, aged 25, and Israr, 32, were unearthed during the early hours of Thursday, just nineteen days after the pair vanished from Lahchaura village.
Confrontation and Murder Suspicions
The two friends had departed together on a motorcycle on the afternoon of July 25 and never returned home. Their phones went silent from the evening of July 27, prompting concerned family members to launch a search. Israr’s father, Ridku, recounted how relatives made repeated calls to the missing men’s mobiles without receiving any response.
According to police, the tragedy may have stemmed from a dispute involving temple priest Naresh Nath. Family members alleged that Ankit and Israr had confronted the priest regarding his rumored relationship with Ankit’s sister. The pair reportedly visited the temple on July 25 to urge the cleric to terminate the connection.
Authorities believe the confrontation turned violent, resulting in the deaths of both men. Their bodies were allegedly transported behind the temple and interred under cemented tiles to hide the crime.
Investigation and Breakthrough
A missing-person report was filed at the Chandinagar police station on July 29. Investigators analyzed call detail records, tracked mobile locations, and gathered information from locals. They eventually determined that the victims had been last spotted near the Ganesh temple in Lahchaura.
The case gained momentum late Wednesday night when police conducted a raid on the temple. However, Nath reportedly escaped with his son before officers arrived at the site. Two of the priest’s disciples, identified as Krishna Yadav and Ujjwal, were taken into custody.
Suraj Kumar Rai, the superintendent of police for Baghpat, explained the recovery process: “Police have been conducting intensive investigation in the case registered at Chandinagar police station on July 29. Based on technical evidence and questioning of the accused, the bodies of the two missing persons from Lahchaura village were recovered on the identification of the arrested accused.”
Two people had been detained for questioning in connection with the case, said police.
Initially, the two detainees attempted to divert investigators, but they eventually revealed the burial location and the priest’s involvement. Following the recovery, legal procedures including the inquest report were completed in the presence of a magistrate before the bodies were transported for post-mortem examination.
Victim Profiles and Identification
Ankit and Israr resided opposite one another and shared a close bond. Ankit, who was unemployed, was the sole brother among five sisters. Israr worked as a laborer and provided for his wife and three children.
Identification of the remains was confirmed through clothing, a wristwatch, and distinctive physical traits. Ankit’s physical disability proved particularly helpful in establishing his identity.
After the recovery, the necessary legal formalities, including preparation of the inquest report in the presence of a magistrate, were completed before the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. “On the basis of evidence and facts emerging during the investigation, necessary legal sections have been added or modified in the case. Two accused have been taken into custody and the role of other persons is also being examined,” the SP said.
Police continue to examine the precise sequence of events and determine the exact motive behind the double murder. The priest remains at large while investigators probe the full extent of his role in the incident.
