The selection reflects the party’s determination to broaden its appeal within Punjab’s rural and Sikh demographics, particularly following the dissolution of its partnership with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Strategic Realignment After SAD Split
The organizational overhaul aligns with the BJP’s efforts to consolidate its autonomous political foundation in Punjab. This development comes after the party severed its nearly thirty-year alliance with the SAD in September 2020, a decision triggered by disagreements over the agricultural legislation introduced by the central government. Since that separation, the BJP has focused on diversifying its constituency beyond its conventional urban supporters, which include traders, Hindu voters, and segments of the Dalit population.
During the BJP’s maiden independent campaign in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, the party achieved limited success. It secured merely two parliamentary seats and garnered a 6.6 percent share of the total votes. The SAD experienced an equally challenging outcome, managing to win only three positions within the 117-seat legislative assembly.
General Secretaries and Vice-Presidents Appointed
The five general secretaries hold the most influential organizational roles following the state president. The BJP has maintained Anil Sarin and Parminder Singh Brar from the previous administration while bringing in Rajesh Bagha, Rajnish Dhiman, and Jiwan Garg. Most of these appointments favor established BJP members. Brar stands out as the sole exception, having joined the party before the 2022 elections and serving as the only Sikh among the five general secretaries.
The twelve vice-presidents include former minister Surjit Kumar Jyani alongside Rakesh Rathour, Subhash Sharma, Manjit Singh Rai, Ashwani Sekhri, Sushil Rinku, Geja Ram Valmiki, Tejinder Singh Bittu, Jasmine Sandhawalia, Jatinder Mittal, Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon, and Ranjit Singh Gill.
Several distinguished Sikh politicians have been integrated into the vice-presidential ranks. In an unexpected development, the BJP selected Anuj Khosla, a municipal corporation councillor from Patiala, to lead the state’s Yuva Morcha. Despite competition from several well-known young leaders, Khosla secured the position, partly due to his proximity to former Union minister Preneet Kaur.
The party has also kept Jai Inder Kaur in her role as president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, maintaining a connection with the former Patiala royal family associated with ex-chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
Media and Spokesperson Roles
Retired IAS officer SS Channi has taken on the responsibility of chief spokesperson for the party. Vineet Joshi will oversee the state media cell, while Pritpal Singh Baliawal and former IAS officer Parampal Kaur Sidhu serve as co-media in-charges.
