According to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office, the 72-year-old was located on a bicycle path within the Coyote Run Open Space region of Louisville on July 30.

“I flew from California to Colorado to try to find him, and the police found him earlier this afternoon, today, and he is no longer with us,” James explained in a video shared on his Instagram account.

“RIP to my dad. He was my best friend. I love him. I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster ride like none other that I’ve ever been through. This has been the most mental mind (expletive) thing ever. Your dad is missing, and then you find him and he is no longer with us. It’s a different level of (expletive) with your head. So, I just want to thank everybody who helped me find him by sharing my post. I just need some time to myself. I love him so much man.”

Denver 7 reported that McGinley previously held a teaching position at the University of Colorado. Beyond his academic role, he was celebrated for founding an online performance poetry journal designed for high school students. His professional biography highlighted his commitment to literacy outreach and professional development programs.
When James initially posted about his father’s disappearance, he provided specific details to aid the search. McGinley was riding a white Specialized pedal bicycle and was dressed in a dark blue shirt paired with black shorts, white socks, and shoes.
