The Punjab Subordinate Services Federation has called for this coordinated action, which began on July 23 and will continue through July 26. Employees in Ludhiana are participating in this demonstration to demand resolution of several critical issues affecting their careers and financial wellbeing.

Services Disrupted Across Multiple Departments

Citizens visiting government offices in Ludhiana are facing considerable delays and reduced service availability. Nearly all sections within the deputy commissioner’s facility have reported operational slowdowns. The sub-divisional magistrate’s chamber, additional deputy commissioner’s office, MA division, and numerous other administrative units in Ludhiana are experiencing reduced capacity. Residents seeking official documentation, permits, or other government services should plan accordingly and expect longer wait times during this four-day period.

Union representatives have warned that if their demands remain unaddressed, the strike could extend beyond the originally scheduled conclusion date. This potential extension adds another layer of uncertainty for both government employees and the public who depend on these services.

Key Demands Include Pension and Salary Reforms

The primary objectives of the strike include adoption of the Old Pension Scheme, revision of compensation structures, and restoration of career advancement privileges for affected employees. Beyond these fundamental demands, workers are also pressing for enhanced dearness allowance provisions. Current statistics reveal that Punjab government staff receive approximately 42 percent dearness allowance, while central government workers enjoy 60 percent, creating a noticeable disparity in compensation packages.

Another pressing concern involves wage equity related to educational qualifications. Federation representatives argue that clerical positions requiring graduation degrees should receive higher compensation than sewadar roles where Class 10 certification is sufficient. Despite this qualification difference, these positions currently receive nearly identical remuneration, which employees consider unfair.

Additional demands include consistent hiring practices to fill vacant positions, protection of employment terms for recently recruited staff, and settlement of various administrative matters that have remained unresolved for extended periods.

Our demands have remained pending despite repeated meetings with the government. We have been left with no option but to protest. If the government does not take a positive decision, the strike will be intensified after July 26,

Tejinder Singh Dhanaula, the federation’s state president, emphasized these critical points during recent public statements regarding the ongoing situation in Ludhiana and across Punjab.

Commuters and citizens navigating government offices in Ludhiana have expressed considerable frustration with current service levels. Sugampreet Kaur, who arrived at the DC office for official business, noted that numerous visitors are leaving empty-handed because multiple departments operate below normal capacity. She urged authorities to employ dialogue mechanisms for swift restoration of essential functions.

I’ve been waiting here for more than an hour but there has been no response. The work is getting delayed and people are being asked to wait without any clarity.

Riya Sharma shared similar sentiments while conducting her own official errands at the facility, highlighting the confusion and extended wait times affecting citizens seeking government services in Ludhiana.

The strike represents one of the most significant labor actions in recent years, with implications extending beyond immediate service disruptions to potentially reshape employment conditions for thousands of government workers across the state.
