Yemen's 'Spider-Man' Dies in Volcanic Crater Fall

Spider Man of Yemen dies in fall - Authorities confirmed the death of a fearless climber nicknamed "The Spider-Man of Yemen" after he plummeted into a volcanic crater during an attempt to scale vertical rock formations without safety gear.

Incident Details

Al-Qaqa Ibn Antar, 30, was ascending the rugged walls of the Hardah Dam volcanic crater in Yemen’s southern Dhale province when he slipped. The Civil Defense Authority shared a 10-second video capturing the moment of his descent, highlighting the perilous nature of his endeavor.

"The operation was complex due to the steep and rocky terrain, which hindered access," stated the authority.

Rescue teams, including divers and water specialists, conducted a four-hour search to recover Antar’s body from 30 meters below the surface. His remains were found by underwater searchers in the crater’s depths.

The Volcanic Crater

Nestled near the city of Damt, the Hardah Dam — also known as Haradhat Damt — is a striking geological formation. Its steep, rocky walls encircle a hot sulfurous lake, making it a unique and challenging site for adventurers.

Antar had built a following online for his daring feats, showcasing high-risk climbs of Yemen’s most treacherous landscapes. His videos often went viral, including one where he hung from a cliff’s edge with bare hands, legs dangling over a steep slope.

Authorities Issue Safety Warning

Following the tragedy, the Civil Defense Authority called for greater caution among climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. They emphasized the necessity of adhering to safety procedures and using appropriate protective gear to avoid similar incidents.
