Inside Lindsey Graham's bond with 'devastated' sister Darline Nordone: ‘He was always my parent’

Inside Lindsey Graham s bond - Following the abrupt passing of Senator Lindsey Graham at 71 due to a ruptured aorta, his sister Darline Nordone has emerged as a potential candidate to fill his Senate seat. The decision comes just days after his death, with President Donald Trump endorsing her for the temporary role, urging South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint her.

A Family Tied by Loss and Love

After their parents’ demise, Graham became the legal guardian of his only sibling. Their mother succumbed to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, while their father died from a heart attack—events that left Darline, then a child, in Graham’s care. The pair shared a deep connection, forged in the aftermath of their family’s tragedy.

“Lindsey was always my parent,” Nordone told The New York Times. “There was no doubt in my mind or anyone else’s mind that Lindsey was my guardian.”

Graham and Nordone grew up in a modest setting, operating their parents’ bar known as the Sanitary Cafe. They later relocated to a trailer and a house adjacent to it. The loss of both parents in quick succession—first their mother in 1976 at age 20, then their father 15 months later—shaped their relationship, which Nordone described as multifaceted.

“He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one,” Nordone added. “He was just dedicating all of that time to raising me and going to school and trying to get an education. There's just only so much time in a day.”

According to The New York Times, Graham’s sister often showcased his compassionate side by recounting memories, such as teaching her to ride a bicycle. His own words from 2015, as cited by Fox News, reflected his pride: “Of all the things that have happened in my life, her turning out so well is the highlight of it by far.”

Trump's Endorsement and the Path Forward

Despite never marrying or having children of his own, Graham’s legacy lives on through his sister. Trump has championed Nordone’s appointment, calling her a “wonderful sister” on his social media platform. The governor is set to announce her as a caretaker replacement by Monday afternoon.

Nordone, who has held no public office, is a mother of two and works in vocational rehabilitation. She assists individuals with disabilities in securing employment in South Carolina. However, whether she will accept the role remains uncertain. “Actually, I'm just kind of like devastated right now,” she said to the New York Post shortly after Trump’s announcement.

The filing deadline to succeed Graham and run for a full Senate term is July 21. A special election primary is scheduled for August 11, marking the next steps in the process.
