Monkey Captured Following Two-Week Attack Spree in Indonesian Community

Resident Safety Restored After Animal Traps Macaque

Bharatmorningnews.com – Animal control specialists have successfully contained a long-tailed macaque responsible for a fortnight of unprovoked assaults on residents of Tembilahan, a town situated on Sumatra island in Indonesia. The creature's aggressive behavior prompted educational institutions across the area to suspend in-person classes as families expressed concern for their children's safety.

The adult primate inflicted injuries on eighteen local inhabitants through biting and scratching, predominantly targeting individuals who were by themselves during the attacks. According to Junaidy Ismail, who leads the Tembilahan fire and rescue operations, the total count reached nineteen separate incidents involving eighteen distinct victims, with one person experiencing two separate encounters with the animal.

"As of today, there were 19 attacks, with 18 victims. One victim was attacked twice," Ismail reported to AFP on Friday.

Trappers secured the macaque late Thursday evening using a strategically positioned trap within the town boundaries. Rescue personnel released footage on Friday displaying the captured animal alive but visibly agitated, confined behind metal bars inside a transport cage.

Ari Syuria, a municipal official, advised locals to maintain vigilance since the captured macaque might have been functioning alongside other members of its troop. In a message shared via Instagram, Ari emphasized that additional monkeys could potentially be responsible for similar incidents.

"The concern is that there may be other monkeys attacking people," Ari stated in her social media communication.

Educational facilities continued their closure through Friday, with forty schools remaining shut while administrators arranged three days of virtual instruction for hundreds of students in Tembilahan. Local authorities indicated that campus doors would resume normal operations on Monday provided conditions warrant it.

The macaque has been relocated to Pekanbaru, serving as the provincial capital for Riau on Sumatra. There, representatives from the nature conservation organization will conduct comprehensive blood analysis and behavioral monitoring to assess the animal's health status.

"We want to establish whether the monkey is carrying any diseases," explained Ujang Holisudin, a representative of the conservation agency, in his statement to AFP.

Encounters between humans and wildlife represent a recurring challenge throughout Southeast Asia's extensive island chain. Such conflicts intensify particularly in regions where deforestation for palm oil cultivation progressively diminishes living spaces for native species including elephants, tigers, and various monkey populations.
