‘Beautiful, killer, tough’: Trump praises PM Modi at bilateral meet | Video
Beautiful killer tough - During a joint session at the G7 Summit, US President Donald Trump highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership qualities, calling him “beautiful” and noting his reputation as a formidable negotiator. The two leaders convened for their first discussion in 16 months, following Modi’s visit to the White House in February 2025.
“He’s been my friend for a long time now, and we’ve always had a great relationship,” Trump remarked, emphasizing his personal bond with Modi. “We’ll be going to India sometime in the future.”
Trump described the India-US trade agreement as nearing completion, with final details set to be resolved soon. He acknowledged Modi’s physical presence while underscoring his strategic resolve, stating, “He looks like an angel, but actually, he’s as tough as a killer.”
“We’ve been there for a little while, and he’s a very tough negotiator — one of the toughest, actually,” Trump added, reflecting on the progress of talks. “He gets you by surprise, but few people are like this.”
Modi initiated the dialogue by commending Trump’s role in West Asia, raising concerns about the safety of Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz. “I hope ensuring their security will be a key part of any agreement with Iran,” he said, stressing the importance of stability in the region.
“He’s such a nice man,” Modi noted, “but I say he’s very tough.”
Trump responded to the topic by acknowledging the risks of the maritime profession, calling it “a rough profession.” He also reiterated that India’s influence in West Asia is contingent on Modi’s leadership, stating, “As long as he’s the leader, India plays a big role.”
Modi further emphasized that both he and Trump share the view that maintaining the Strait of Hormuz’s openness is critical for global economic stability. “India has consistently stressed the importance of free navigation,” he added, highlighting the strategic significance of the waterway.
Trade Deal Progress
With negotiations in advanced stages, the proposed agreement between the US and India is expected to be finalized within weeks. Trump’s comments underscored the growing alignment between the two nations, despite their diverse approaches to diplomacy.
