Only seven rooms were ultimately provided at the Grand Tiara, while 33 rooms were assigned at the nearby Toyoko Inn. The shooters, coaches and staff did not complete check-in until around 4am, approximately seven hours after arriving at the airport.
Coaches pressed for the entire Indian group to remain in one location. Larger rooms at the main hotel were needed by support staff and physiotherapists, who required room for treatment tables and related work. As a result, the squad shifted together to the smaller hotel.

For elite athletes approaching competition, room conditions are not merely a comfort issue. Training range remains a demanding commute
Travel to the Aichi Shooting Range became the next obstacle. The venue is about two and a half hours from the team’s hotel, making each training day a major logistical commitment. On the first morning, more than 100 people were waiting for a bus that could carry only 50.
Several Indian team members were unable to board and had to wait for the next vehicle, adding another hour before their journey even began. After the long ride, shooters completed their training session and were served cold packed lunches at the range.
“It took us two and a half hours to reach the range, which is a very long commute. It was very challenging and boring.”
The return journey also proved uncertain. Some shooters waited around an hour and a half for transport after training, while others faced delays approaching three hours. The remote setting of the range made independent travel difficult, as taxis and cab services were not readily available nearby.
“There is a shortage of buses and frequency is also an issue. The range is so isolated that you cannot get taxis or cabs.”
The contingent contacted the Indian Olympic Association, which arranged cars to carry shooters and support personnel. Transport improved on Friday, although the considerable travel time between the hotel and shooting venue remains a concern as the event approaches.
Wider questions over Games readiness
The issues faced by the Indian shooters come amid wider criticism of accommodation and operational arrangements at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. With fewer than 24 hours remaining before the opening ceremony, organisers were working to find rooms for visiting delegations.
Accommodation plans have drawn attention because container-style rooms and a cruise ship moored for use as lodging have been used for some participants. The Games are expected to house more than 17,000 athletes and support staff, alongside 5,000 technical officials, creating a complex accommodation and transport challenge.
India’s chef de mission, Sahdev Yadav, said on Friday that the Indian Olympic Association had booked additional rooms after organisers removed about 30 to 35 Indian athletes from the accommodation list.
