Guwahati Student’s Death at Homestay Triggers Demand for Full Investigation

Bharatmorningnews.com – A 22-year-old student of Gauhati University was declared dead after being taken unconscious from a homestay on the outskirts of Guwahati early on Saturday, prompting her family to allege that she was tortured, gang-raped and murdered.

Police have arrested a man suspected to be the student’s boyfriend and identified him as the main accused in what officials have described, at the preliminary stage, as a murder case. Other people have also been detained for questioning as investigators work to establish the sequence of events and the cause of death.

The student had gone to the homestay on Friday with the man. During the early hours of Saturday, she was taken in an unconscious condition to a nearby health facility. She was subsequently referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Family recounts distress call

Her relatives said she had called her mother at about 2am and pleaded for help. The family alleged that the call ended suddenly and that her phone was switched off afterward.

“She told her mother that they were torturing her, that they would kill her, and asked her to save her. She said that the boyfriend kicked her in the chest. Soon after, her phone was switched off. Later, we saw her at the hospital when she was already dead,” the student’s father said.

The father said his daughter had injuries on several parts of her body and alleged that the extent of the injuries suggested the involvement of more than one person. He called for a comprehensive inquiry and strict action against everyone found responsible.

“From her lips to other parts of her body and even her private parts, there were injuries. One person cannot do this. I am sure there were multiple men who raped and murdered her. We demand a proper investigation,” he said.

He also spoke of the family’s grief after carrying his daughter’s body to the cremation ground.

“I carried my daughter’s body to the cremation ground. She was only 22. I want her murderers to face the same,” he said.

Post-mortem expected to clarify cause of death

Guwahati West deputy commissioner of police Bolin Deori said the body had been sent to GMCH for a post-mortem examination. The findings are expected to help investigators determine the medical cause of death and assess the allegations raised by the family.

“As per the preliminary inquiry, this was a murder and the prime accused has been arrested. We are investigating the matter further and have detained some others for questioning,” Deori said on Sunday.

Deori said police observed multiple injuries on the student’s body. He added that investigators had not found blood either on the body or on the homestay floor when they inspected the location.

“We haven’t found blood on the body or the floor of the homestay when we visited. The exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained,” he said.

Police were alerted after the local health facility received the student in an unconscious state, Deori said. Officers then began their response and investigation.

While the family has alleged gang rape, police have not confirmed that allegation. The post-mortem report and the continuing investigation will be significant in clarifying the nature of the injuries, the circumstances inside the homestay and whether additional suspects should face charges.

Accused man’s family seeks justice for student

Relatives of the arrested man said the student and the accused had been in a relationship for several months. They said both families were aware of the relationship, and that the student had visited the man’s home during Eid this year. They also said she had expressed willingness to marry him.

The accused man’s mother said she had spoken with the student during that visit and had discussed the difference in their religions.

“I told her, ‘Maa (daughter), you are an educated girl and my son is also educated. My son is a Muslim and you are a Hindu. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.’”

She said the student knew her boyfriend was Muslim. On Friday evening, she said, her son received a phone call and left the house without explaining where he was going.

“When I asked him where he was going, he said nothing and left. Now we see that he has been accused of killing her,” she said.

The accused man’s mother also called for justice for the deceased student and said punishment should follow if her son is found guilty.

“If he is guilty, he should be punished. I have heard that the girl called her mother that night and told her that she was being tortured. I want justice for her.”

The case has raised urgent questions about the events that unfolded between the student’s arrival at the homestay and her admission to hospital. For the bereaved family, the investigation carries the responsibility of establishing the facts, examining every allegation and identifying all people who may have played a role in her death.
