SAD’s Harsimrat shows weapon used in Nanded attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal, stitches on his arm
SAD MP Displays Blade from Nanded Attack, Demands NIA Investigation
Bharatmorningnews.com – Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal member of parliament, presented photographs of the sharp instrument allegedly wielded against her husband and party president Sukhbir Singh Badal during a Sunday appearance. Alongside the visual evidence, she revealed that she had dispatched a formal letter to Union home minister Amit Shah requesting that the National Investigation Agency take over the case.
The incident unfolded on Thursday, August 13, inside a gurdwara situated on the periphery of Nanded town in Maharashtra. Badal, who carries Z-plus security clearance, sustained wounds to his right arm. Police identified the assailant as Jaspal Singh, aged between 60 and 62.
The Weapon and the Wound
Displaying an image of the blade, Kaur Badal described how the attacker targeted her husband's chest with what she called a 1.5-foot-long sharp weapon.
"The attacker aimed at his chest with a 1.5-foot-long sharp weapon, we said, but as Sukhbir Singh Badal raised his hand to defend himself, the blade pierced right through his forearm."
She also shared a photograph capturing one side of the stitched-up arm.
A Second Attempt Within Two Years
Kaur Badal framed the Nanded assault as the second bid on her husband's life. She noted that the individual responsible for an earlier attack in Punjab had already been released on bail and accused the AAP-led state police of suppressing that case.
"Strict action must be taken against anyone involved — whether they are police officers or politicians," she added.
The justification, in her words, was straightforward: a "massive conspiracy lies behind this."
The Letter to Amit Shah
In correspondence addressed to the home minister, Kaur Badal described how an alert security officer had risked his own life to stop the assailant from completing what she termed a lethal intent.
"Mr Badal suffered an injury to his right arm. The consequences could have been fatal had an alert security personnel not risked his own life to prevent the assailant from carrying out his lethal intent."
She went on to draw explicit parallels between the two incidents:
"I wish to point out that the August 13 incident was not an isolated one. On December 4, 2024, a similar attempt was made on Mr Badal's life at the sacred premises of Shri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar, when he was performing Seva as directed by the holy Shri Akal Takht Sahib."
"The two assassination attempts have several disturbing parallels and raise serious questions about whether they are connected. I also wish to emphasise that the second assassination attempt raises serious questions about the manner in which the Punjab Government and the Punjab Police dealt with the first attack,"
Reactions Within the SAD
Speaking on Saturday, Kaur Badal labelled the assault a "well-planned political conspiracy" allegedly hatched since 2015 to destabilise peace in Punjab. According to news agency PTI, she described the preceding 48 hours as extraordinarily difficult for herself and her family.
"I am sorry, I am very emotional today. Because the last 48 hours have been very difficult for me and my family. I was not supposed to be here today; Sukhbir ji had to be here. But see what they did to him!"
Bikram Singh Majithia, an SAD leader and Badal's brother-in-law, made a parallel demand on Friday. He called for the NIA to investigate both the Nanded episode and the December 2024 incident at the Golden Temple entrance, stressing that this was not the first such occurrence.
