Expanded Rules for Alternative Fuels
The updated Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, have been revised to accommodate a wider range of alternative fuels, including E85 (85% ethanol blended with petrol), E100 (pure ethanol), B100 biodiesel, and hydrogen-CNG hybrids. This change aims to simplify the integration of ethanol into the fuel supply chain and ensure that existing vehicles can adapt to these new blends without major modifications. Gadkari said people laughed at his vision of a fully ethanol-powered future, but the new rules provide a solid foundation for that goal.
The revised regulations also include provisions for the production and distribution of ethanol-based fuels, encouraging automakers to retrofit their vehicles for compatibility. As part of broader initiatives, Gadkari announced a hydrogen-powered pilot project in Nagpur, which will introduce a hydrogen pump and two experimental buses. "The day is now near," Gadkari said, expressing optimism about hydrogen's role in the nation's sustainability goals. During a recent event, both Gadkari and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri underscored the economic and environmental benefits of ethanol.
