‘May exam went well, was preparing for re-NEET’: Ghaziabad student dies by suicide 2 days before June 21 exam
Ghaziabad Student Dies by Suicide Two Days Before NEET Re-Exam
May exam went well was preparing - A 22-year-old Ghaziabad student who had reportedly performed well in the May NEET exam and was preparing for the June 21 re-exam was found dead by suicide on Friday. The tragic incident occurred just two days before the rescheduled examination, raising questions about the pressures faced by medical aspirants. The National Testing Agency (NTA) had canceled the original May 3 NEET-UG test due to alleged paper leaks, prompting the re-schedule. The student’s death underscores the mental health challenges among students preparing for high-stakes exams like NEET.
Final Video Message Highlights Emotional Turmoil
According to local police, the student left a video message on his phone hours before his death. The recording, shared by NDTV, revealed his emotional state as he recounted six years of relentless preparation for the NEET UG exam. "He was in a deep state of depression and didn’t blame anyone for his decision," said Upasana Pandey, an ACP from Vijay Nagar police station. In the video, he displayed his study room and mentioned he was "thinking of doing something different today." The chilling moment came when he pointed to a noose hanging from the ceiling fan, hinting at his resolve to end his life.
"The student expressed feelings of frustration and hopelessness, stating that despite his May exam performance, he felt unprepared for the re-exam. He mentioned the stress of the revised schedule and the fear of not meeting expectations," said an official statement from the NTA.
Family’s Perspective Contrasts with Police Report
The student’s family, based in Vijay Nagar’s H-block, stated that he was in good spirits and had no immediate signs of distress. They emphasized that his May exam results were satisfactory, and he was diligently preparing for the June 21 retake. "He had appeared for the NEET-UG in May, which he believed went well, and was confident about the re-exam," said Dharampal, the SHO at Vijay Nagar police station. However, the police noted that the student’s emotional state had deteriorated in the days leading up to the exam, suggesting internal pressures might have contributed to his decision.
NTA’s Security Measures for NEET Re-Exam
To address concerns over the May paper leak, the NTA implemented stringent security measures for the June 21 NEET-UG re-exam. This included deploying 1,38,560 CCTV cameras and 51,311 jammers across 5,440 centers nationwide. The agency also conducted a nationwide mock drill on June 20 to test the effectiveness of these measures. Despite the enhanced security, the student’s death is not directly linked to the controversy, as per police statements.
Exam Pressure and Mental Health Concerns
Medical entrance exams like NEET are known to exert immense pressure on students, often leading to anxiety and stress. Experts have highlighted that the pandemic disrupted study routines, and the rescheduling of exams added to the emotional strain. "Students who passed the initial exam but had to wait for a re-schedule may experience heightened stress, especially if they feel their performance is not sufficient," noted Dr. Ravi Sharma, a psychologist specializing in academic stress. The student’s case has reignited discussions about the importance of mental health support systems for exam candidates.
Community Response and Support Calls
News of the student’s death has prompted an outpouring of support from the local community and educational institutions. Teachers and peers expressed shock at the tragedy, with many calling for greater awareness of mental health issues among students. A local NGO, Youth Wellness Alliance, is now organizing counseling sessions for NEET aspirants. "We need to ensure students feel supported, not just academically but emotionally," said Priya Mehta, the organization’s founder. The incident has also led to calls for a review of the NEET process to reduce the burden on candidates.
