India Declares Day of Mourning for Qatar's Father Amir
India declares a day of mourning - The Indian government has announced a day of national mourning for Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the former Amir of Qatar, following his passing at the age of 74. This gesture honors his contributions to the nation’s progress and his close ties with India.
Government Actions and Condolences
In a formal statement, the external affairs ministry confirmed that the national flag will be flown at half-mast on Monday across the country. Additionally, all official entertainment events will be suspended on that day.
“A visionary leader who led Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity, we remember him also as a true friend whom I had the honour of meeting during my last visit to Qatar in February 2024,” Modi said on social media.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, emphasizing Sheikh Hamad’s role as a trusted ally and transformative leader who elevated Qatar’s global position through strategic development initiatives. Modi also conveyed his sympathy to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the current Amir, and the Qatari royal family and populace.
Leadership and Legacy
Sheikh Hamad’s tenure from 1995 to 2013 marked significant progress in Qatar’s economic, social, and cultural sectors. His leadership was instrumental in positioning the country as the world’s largest LNG exporter.
Qatar has initiated a four-day mourning period starting Sunday, following the announcement of the Amir’s passing. During his reign, the Indian community in Qatar experienced substantial growth. The Amir’s three visits to India in 1999, 2005, and 2012 further strengthened bilateral ties.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju is set to travel to Qatar soon to extend the Indian government’s condolences on behalf of the nation.
