Morne Morkel Eyes Heat and Humidity as Key Test for India at Galle

Bharatmorningnews.com – India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has identified the tropical conditions awaiting his team as the primary obstacle in the upcoming opening Test match versus Sri Lanka. The contest begins this Saturday at the Galle venue, where the visiting side must navigate both temperature and moisture levels.

The ex-South African fast bowler emphasized that the Kookaburra cricket ball's transition from hard to soft will significantly influence how Indian quicks perform. Despite these concerns, Morkel expressed strong faith in Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, who are expected to form the pace attack for the initial match.

Adapting to Red-Ball Conditions

India's return to Test cricket comes after a considerable gap. The team last competed in the longest format during early June against Afghanistan at New Chandigarh Stadium. Prior to that engagement, they faced South Africa domestically in November—nearly nine months earlier.

Sri Lanka enters with more recent experience, having completed a two-match Test series in the West Indies between June and July.

Prasidh, Siraj, they've played a lot of cricket back home, where it's also tough bowling conditions. I think coming here, our skill is there, the planning will be there but the biggest challenge will be the heat and humidity.

The Kookaburra ball, going back to that, once it gets a little bit softer… how we can stack up overs together with intensity and create that pressure. Because we haven't played a lot of red-ball cricket in the last couple of months, going back into that is going to be a challenge.

Rahul's Expected Leadership Role

KL Rahul stands ready to assume a prominent position within the batting lineup. Following the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last year, Rahul has emerged as India's most dependable opener, combining solid technique with mental resilience.

His recent performances have been commendable, and he previously impressed during two matches in Sri Lanka in 2017. These factors make him a central figure for the upcoming series.

I think KL, the last couple of years, the way he's been leading up front with the batting has been exceptional. And that's the sort of communication that we expect him to speak to the guys here in the preparation, [like] at the nets what to expect. But I think our guys have learned a lot about their games individually over the last couple of months. And that's one of the reasons why we've come out here 10 days earlier, to give the guys the best opportunity to prepare and to work on their individual game plans. Just to figure out how they're going to score on the surface here.

Morkel noted that the squad's early arrival—ten days ahead of schedule—provides valuable time for players to adjust to local conditions and refine their personal strategies for scoring runs on the Galle pitch.
