CBCI Calls for FCRA Bill Withdrawal Amid Rising Tensions

Bharatmorningnews.com – On the eve of India's 80th Independence Day, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India issued a statement urging the central government to withdraw the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill. The apex body of the Catholic Church in India also voiced serious concerns regarding the Christian community, which has encountered various forms of violence, intimidation, and mob lynching across multiple regions of the country.

Anthony Cardinal Poola, president of the CBCI, highlighted that Christians have contributed to the nation for generations through humanitarian work, healthcare initiatives, educational programs, and social services. He warned that the new legislation might obstruct institutions engaged in charitable activities.

Upholding Constitutional Values

"India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. Therefore, the question before us is not, 'Which religion is greater?' or 'Which religion should prevail?'"

The cardinal emphasized that the primary concern should be maintaining human dignity and creating an inclusive society. He noted that true freedom must manifest as justice, equality, and support for marginalized groups.

"Our concern must be much greater: How can we uphold the dignity of every human person and build a nation where no one is left behind?"

Cardinal Poola further stressed that every individual possesses the right to worship, serve, and live without fear. He called upon government authorities to safeguard constitutional freedoms and deliver justice when violations occur.

Legislative Background

The Foreign Contribution Amendment Bill, 2026, was first introduced in the Lok Sabha during March 2026. Following heated debates and strong opposition protests during the Monsoon Session, the contentious measure was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for detailed examination.

"We therefore respectfully appeal to the Government to repeal the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, whose provisions could seriously hinder genuine charitable institutions from continuing this humanitarian service to the people of India,"

The CBCI president concluded by reflecting on the sacrifices made to achieve freedom. He urged citizens to reaffirm their dedication to a nation where diversity flourishes, justice prevails, and every person receives dignified treatment.

"On this Independence Day, let us renew our commitment to India where freedom is respected, diversity is celebrated, justice is upheld, and every human being is treated with dignity."
